No... mine are not nice. I was supposed to lose them by age twenty five (All medical reasons) but kept them nice until after age 41. Dentist was afraid to work on me at that point of one bad tooth. He thought I would die in his chair. So... I waited and begged, as he was the only dentist I could go to and I couldn't afford anyone else. Finally a few years later he agreed when I said I would sign anything... if I died from a pulled tooth... I was going to die anyway. He was freaked that I was actually doing my own dental work at home.

He started work... wouldn't do what I really needed done... and then my son happened and I had to focus on him. Now they were neglected too long and I need dentures, but I didn't need them at twenty five! I figure I can get dentures... so I am thankful that they are something that can be replaced... verses something that could not be. But still, I rarely open my mouth... too prideful and cannot wait until I can get something done. I keep them clean with constant care... but...

And yes... it runs a lot of people off if you mention dental problems! lol It's friggin embarassing and is my hell in life.

THANK you for this post!  I so understand.

My teeth could become dentures- but they run like $800 for cheap ones.  Aside from that the thought of putting a foreign object in my mouth is repulsive.   So I figure I need teeth to eat and to talk.  It does get harder to do each with each tooth lost.

Everywhere I lived it was fluoridated water... so I doubt that has anything to do with it.

I used to have almost perfect teeth, when I went to have my wisdom teeth pulled at age 23, the oral surgeon just about had an orgasm since he rarely saw anyone with good teeth! But I started chewing ice because I'm anemic, and there went my nice teeth! Oh, they are still lovely from the front, thank heavens, but I've had a couple of molars pulled, and I need at least one root canal, and a new crown. *Sigh*

Amazingly, my 82 year old mom still has all of her teeth except her wisdom teeth!

My dad had terrible teeth, and most of my siblings took after him. So it's not just how you take care of them, sometimes it's what you are born with!

Good luck getting your teeth done PA.

Been lucky in that respect. Haven't ever lost a tooth, not been to a dentist in decades, do not have halitosis and can eat the toughest piece of meat you can come up with.

The last time I was to a dentist was to have a baby tooth removed, the fucker just would not fall out, it needed a little help. Later I learned how to help them myself. I have a complete full set of teeth except for a couple of parts missing, but no teeth missing. I have all of my wisdom teeth as well.

I don't know why, if that subject is to be explored fine, but I would have to remember alot of shit about my dietary habits of old. Like the time between age nine and eleven when I refused to eat anything out of a can, and yes that meant anything that did not require refrigeration. I said if the bugs and germs don't want it neither do I.

My teeth are not perfect. They have been marred by the blows of a shovel, stripping wire and opening beer bottles. But they are still intact and I think, alive. What many do not know is that your teeth are supposed to continue to grow thoughout life, that even though they are bones does not mean they do not grow.

At 49 years of age, I would estimate that only about 5% of the people in this country still have teeth that are alive. What caused this is the subject for another debate, different in scope.

Later, I seemingly kept myself lucky, because I can still bite the fuck out of something. But remember I quit all sugar and prepared drugs a long time ago with very rare exceptions. And that is another misconception about sugar. You think you can have your sweets and your teeth ? Wrong. And no amount of brushing will fix it becaue the suger does not destroy your teeth from the outside, it attacks them from the inside. Dental caries and tooth decay are a part of osteoporosis. Teeth are bones. Granted they are a bit different than your tibula or fibula or whatever, but teeth need the exact same resources as bones, that is hard fact and if anyone asks for a cite I will cite them with a fucking .38. It is so obvious you must be one hell of a football fan to be ignorant of this fact.

To avoid sugar is a difficuot thing, perhaps impossible to do totally. There is sugar in everything. It is a drug. At least half of this country is hopelessly addicted to it, because it is not widely recognized as an addiction. But some of us might remember the Twinkie defense.

I said what I said.

Yep, they're pretty good, but I've had work and I have good dental insurance and a great dentist.  Wisdom teeth are removed, mercury fillings have been replaced with porcelain, and I have 2 porcelain crowns.  Had braces as a kid so they're straight.  All in all, pretty good, although it seems recently I have become immune to Novocaine, which is kinda scary (and painful!).

this slave agrees.  she was born with teeth like sandstone.  the fastidious brushing and flossing and flouride treatments didn't prevent decay at the dentist's office every single visit from the age of 5 onward.  always had great gums...just horribly weak teeth.  inherited them from Dad who happily sported a full set of dentures by the time he was 40.

at the age of 33 this slave underwent a total restoration---it took 3 years and a large chunk of cash, and for a looooong time this slave lived on protein shakes...but the end result is finally a set of teeth this slave can be proud of that aren't in a constant state of decay + pain.

I feel for you Lockit ...there is little more continually painful then bad teeth. I wondered if you saw the news story here in St Louis where a local dental school under the tutelage of experienced dental professionals were giving free dental work?

I could try and search and find the story or maybe you could if interested. You have such a nice smile it is a shame you don’t feel you can show it without embarrassment.

I don't feel sorry for anyone, they usually don't want it and it does no good. But I guess I do "feel" for those with bad teeth.

Through no fault of their own, by heredity or diet, alot of people lose their teeth. The info on really how to save them is hard to come by and it is not one size fits all. In the US many more fall to certain conditions than almost anywhere in the world. Obesity, diabetes, cancer, we are just about the capital of the world when it comes to these things, and most of our families came from somewhere else. So it is something we are doing here.

Even I can't put my finger on it exactly. In fact I think it is a combination of factors. But my theory on the subject states that people have problems when their diet does not match their particular needs. I also assert that those needs differ in different people, more precisely of those of different ethnic origins. I won't go too heavy into that because it is politically incorrect and some people are not ready to accept such facts.

I have known plenty of European immigrants. Among the things with which they unhappy about in this land is that they miss the food back home. Things are apparently different there. There are many facts to consider and one of them that sticks out in my mind is the fact that if they catch wind of someone selling raw milk in this country they bring out a SWAT team and act as if the seller moved a million hits of ecstacy. The general economic status of dentists does nothing to abate any possible conclusions there. Flouride is a waste product and there are plenty of people against it's use in the water supply. Studies show that it simply doesn't really work, and a few other interesting things I will not mention right now. But the fact that government buildings started to have water coolers with bottles water right after flouridation began does nothing to instill any confidence on my part in a system proven to put wealth ahead of health.

Another thing about which I have personal knowledge, those $800 dentures ? The people who actually make them have to study the structure and build a set of teeth, including the molars, incisors and so forth. They must be aligned properly and fit right. The dentist sends them an impression and they have to work from that. They also must form the gum covers and all that. What do you think the charge for that ? Well it's about fifty bucks. They do make money, because generally a CDT can knock out probably ten sets of chompers a day. Most of them are reluctant to do it on the side though, because a dentist is supposed to look for gum problems before even ordering the dentures. I put such a deal together a while back - yes I was involved in trafficing illegal dentures ! But the first thing my buddy the CDT said to the guy was "If you have ulcers or tumors in your gums, don't come crying to me". Most are very reluctant to deal direct with the patient for many reasons. So the dentist makes his $700 for about an hours work.

Why doesn't the FDA or USDA do something, like at least warn people ? Take a look at who works there. They are all guilty of a conflict of interest that would get a lawyer disbarred in about ten seconds.

The teeth are fine, but the gums are dreadful. The periodontist wants to spend the next couple of years transplanting healthy tissue from one part of the mouth to another, and me only allowed to eat soft food the whole time. Plus of course it costs a fortune.

Soon as I win the lottery.

Gums CAN improve if you floss.  Well if you catch it early.

<show off>

Healthy teeth and gums here.  But cosmetically, I wasn't blessed with a pretty smile.  Oh well, life goes on.

I always floss. I've had osseos (sp) surgery once and major scrapings twice, I see the dentist every four months including regular checking of the gums. Unfortunately nothing except soft tissue grafts are going to help them.

Could be worse, my sister has to have bone implants to hold teeth implants. She went through a year of hell and it didn't work, so now they're starting all over.

I brush after EVERY meal, snack or cup of coffee.....a bit OCD maybe?
I floss every night and get a cleaning 2x's a year.
I took terrible care of them in my younger years but am making up for that twofold now!
I was told my smile is my best feature because of my teeth/ dimples.

If you live in the US, consider going to Mexico for dental work, especially if you need extensive work. I have a number of friends who have done so and they are all glad that they did. The dentists I speak of are all trained in US dental schools and have state of the art equipment and clinics. Many of them are located in border towns (yuck) because their practice is focused on gringos driving down to get their choppers fixed. Besides, you can enjoy a few Margaritas and get all the pain pills you want in the pharmacies without a prescription. Google it.

Cjan is right, there are clinics in all of the border towns, there is one only 30 miles from me, it's pretty safe, and the clinic is a 5 minute walk from the border. It's very clean and nice in most of the ones I've been to, and they were able to fit me in for an emergency extraction on a walk in basis! $50 and I was done!

You can get a relatively inexpensive hotel on the border, and stay for a week or so while they fix your teeth.

If you are in the UK, there are similar deals in Turkey and other countries.

My dentist is lovely, and i love the way he examines my mouth
i go for check up twice a year at £20 (UK) for about five minutes
i think it is a bit dear for a 5 mins mouth massage, but he does it absolutely lovely.

they could be straighter and maybe a bit whiter
i lost my wisdom teeth and one molar (NHS)... i have 2 molar crowns (done over 25 years ago in Holland parents insurance) and about 3 white fillings at about £50 per filling and one grey one free.
Some receding gums (i used to be a smoker) i have a pocket between two molars so i always carry toothpicks with me, for if anything i eat gets stuck there i have to pick it out immediately.

My teeth get cleaned professionally maybe once every two years...
i am very apt at keeping them tartar free myself,
it takes between 5 and 10 minutes before bedtime, i brush with toothpaste and a soft brush, i also have little cone shaped brushes for in between teeth and a sharp metal hook to remove tartar and sometimes i use floss.
then i brush my entire mouth out with water, my gums, my cheeks and as far as i can on my tongue.

After years of bothering a bit about it i took it upon myself to file my front teeth straight and to the same length, and my smile looked so much better for it
i got the idea in Bali where everybody files their teeth straight
