pahunkboy -> ideas for getting "in whack" Advice PLS. (1/1/2010 10:28:29 PM)

Hello all.

For maybe 10 days- my day and night was reversed.   Then I deteriorated  into "under the weather"  where I slept maybe 4 days.   I mean intense sleep.  Neither mode is good for me.

I can not get errands or too much of my work done.

At this point- day and night mixed up is better then being totally in bed for days on end.

How do I get me back in order?

What can I do and not do toward at least feeling ok?

As to what you can or shouldn't do toward feeling "ok...." without knowing how you feel under the weather, I don't think anyone can give you suggestions other than the basic, eat right, drink lots of fluids, get some rest.

As for your sleep patterns being out of whack, I would suggest the same that is suggested for jet lag. Going to bed "early" isn't going to do it because you aren't sleepy. However, instead of going to sleep at 4 in the morning or whatever, force yourself to stay up through the rest of that day, essentially losing a night's (day's) sleep. Then go to be at a normal hour and set your alarm for the time you want to get up the next day.

We can't really "catch up" on missed sleep, but that is usually a good way to turn it around.

Thanks!

I was very concerned that I should go get blood work done.   But after talking to Jenny- she thinks my ailment is the flu.

I also am on some serious? meds.   I tried to get off of all of them- there is one I simply can not ditch.  It is an antidepressant.

Yet even the night and day mix up is better then clinging to a pillow for a few days.

So far so good in that I am up.

Hey, PA, how much of a hurry are you in to work this thing out? See, I know you're on a lot of meds, and some of those psych meds are a real motherfucker if you skip a whole night's sleep. So, while it's an effective and direct tactic,  the quick fix of staying up all night might make you feel pretty miserable. But what about the option of going to bed a half hour earlier than normal (or even an hour earlier than normal) for a week or two, until that starts to feel like just the right bedtime - and then dialing it back another half hour or hour for another week or two until that becomes your normal bedtime, and so on until you get where you want to be? Is that an option?

Or - another idea might be to get up a couple-three hours earlier for a few days, so that you're more tired earlier in the evening? What time are you getting up these days? Set the alarm for 2 or 3 hours earlier, and when it goes off, force yourself to get up and get going. A few days of that, and you'll be tired in the evening.

Good luck, bro. Sleep problems are a bitch, no doubt about it.

I fired my psychiatrist when he went off on me- as I did not have his "permission" to reduce the effexxor.  Luckily my GP is covering all those meds.

I have accepted that I will never get off of the crap.   I did however reduce down to about 55-60 mg- of what should be 225.    I stabilized at 75 mg for over a year.  So-OK- I need that one.

But then there are maybe 6 other meds that I do not have an "addiction" to.

For the most part- I have left the other meds in place.  I don't want to totally throw me off.  I tho- see that I can ditch them when I want to.

So- I keep the low dose in me.  Of the anti-depressant.  The DR really pissed me off.  I know that I and anyone has the right to be on the least effective dose.  Not do as I say or be gone.

Anyhow- dumping that DR was good as I now do not have to make the drive so often to pick up RXs.  I can get them locally now.

But yeah- if I had to do it again- I would have stopped that med after 1 or 2 years.  It is about 10 years now- by now of course the brain built an addiction to it.   Maybe in a year I can drop 10 more mg.   But not now.  Not at all now.

Psychotropics are a good thing- but they can be over rxed.

To answer your question P,

I can handle day and night mixed up.

In a way there is a serenity to the night and lord knows that is good for me.

It tho- being bed ridden for 36 hours can not stand.

littlewonder -> RE: ideas for getting "in whack" Advice PLS. (1/2/2010 12:15:16 AM)

See BOTH your med dr and psych dr. Let both be completely aware of your ailments and all the meds you are taking and let them figure out what needs to be done.

Could be they need to be changed in some way.

routine blood work is likely a good idea.    No huge rush- but on my list.

OK- I emailed my DR.   Maybe I can do the blood work walk in bases.   Great idea.

I don't know what anti-depressants you're on, but I seem to remember (and I may very well be wrong about this) that with some, you run the risk of heart problems if you don't get sufficient sleep. Like i say, i may be remembering that wrong, but if that's the case, you might be better advised not to skip too many night's sleep.

this is where- IMO very few meds should be used for longterm.

In general I go with what my body demands.

Having the day and night wrong- means no sunlight.    We need sunlight.

I do not have heart problems.

DesFIP -> RE: ideas for getting "in whack" Advice PLS. (1/2/2010 9:05:42 AM)

Two ways to reorder your sleep patterns. Either go to sleep 15 minutes earlier every night from where you are now. Meaning if you don't fall asleep until 5:00 AM then tomorrow go in at 4:45 AM, next night at 4:30 AM and so on. OR go forwards. Meaning if you now are going to sleep at 5:00AM stay up three hours later and go to bed at 8:00AM, then 11:00 AM, and so on.

PA,
I sincerely apologize if I am misunderstanding what is going on here. But if I understand this correctly you have somehow gotten your days and nights turned around is that correct? When that has happened to me (for a variety of different reasons) I generally take a low dose of melatonin...It's a natural supplement sole over the counter. It's said to be a hormone which assists us in getting our days and nights correctly. Truth be told it generally only takes me one or two nights taking it before I'm back on track and no longer have to take anything to go to sleep at night.
I hope this works for you....If there's anything else I can do to help please do not hesitate to let me know.
Kali

Hi PA, I have had the same thing happen to me...quite recently in fact...like last month!  Then last weekend, I had to work late and didn't get home until 5am. I just stayed awake until about 8pm the next night, and now all of a sudden I'm back on a normal schedule! I also discovered that going outside and getting some sun is REALLY important, now I make sure to stand in the sunlight for about 15 minutes a day to stay regulated.

I also started to turn off the computer...yes, I mean it. I turned it OFF! For hours at a time! and I actually did other things around my house. It was really hard to leave the boards during my waking hours, but it has been helpful.

No apology needed.   You did nothing wrong.

Melotonin- I tried that in the 80s.  Did they take it off the market and put it back on?

It is worth a try.  :-)

When I worked in group homes I did many 3rd shifts where I wish I could be awake.

Family and friends getting abit huffy with me.  I don't answer the phone when I sleep. So they think I am  A. Mad at them. B. something is wrong.   So it takes abit of explaining.

I am up now.

I just thought- this cant be good on the utilities. I turn the heat down to sleep.  Well night is colder- so I am not working with the flow. Same with the lights on.

Now- I see you comment on the computer.  In theory that could be a good idea.  But I looked for several months- painstakenly- and spared no expense.  This computer I conclude- does not <burp>  have an off switch.  hehehehehehe
Wanna buy a bridge?
