Everytime I read one of these threads I have to wonder why people are so obsessed with the old ways.  Life is here and now.  Find out what works for you and if you find someone (or 9) that share your vision, run with it.
Old guard, new guard, right guard, it all stinks unless you wear it right.

Missokyst....I don't believe it's a case of people being obsessed with the old ways, it's more of many of us wanting to preserve much of the values and traditions from 40-50 years ago in this modern age. A good example is I am part of a leather family and indirectly part of a larger extended leather family. What we base and how we want to work this dynamic is based upon; respect for ourselves and for members to this 'family', to uphold the core values of integrity, honor and service to our family members and to society as a whole. This also includes actively being involved in the community through service or volunteering in some capacity. The 'Old Guard' concept is formed on a high level of traditions and protocol that many sought and wanted to model their own lives after.

From my understanding, Old Guard was not a specific group of gay Leathermen but a general term given to a very loose collective segment of the gay community 50+ years ago to those identified with the leather culture and worked within a very prejudiced society to change social attitudes towards everyone who identified as gay or lesbian. This is the gist of how I understand the 'Old Guard" and I'm sure that Lady Pact or Lady Hibiscus will correct me if my concept is skewed.

It is quite apparent that many on here have a very low opinion to what we know as 'Old Guard' concepts...that is their right, yet I still see many fail to grasp the concept that the ones who are drawn to Old Guard traditions and such...are not trying to revive how things were 40-50 years ago but trying to keep alive the strong ethics and moral values which we hold dear and maybe to a higher standard that the rest hold themselves to. As I see it: to each their own.
