OK, I think the National Geographic Channel has found a way to get my full attention. Browsing through the program lineup for the next few days, i came across the following title - "The Whale That Exploded." Well, there's no way I'm going to skip past that without checking to see what it's all about, so I clicked on it -

"A scientific investigation into why a 56-ton sperm whale exploded in a street in Taiwan."

Yeah, if I lived in Taiwan, I think I'd be a little curious myself to know why 56-ton whales were exploding in my streets. In fact, I'm really hoping that at some point, someone will launch some sort of investigation as to what a 56-ton whale was doing wandering around the streets of Taiwan in the first place. This doesn't sound like normal behavior for a whale. What was he doing there? What was his purpose? I've just got a lot of questions about this whole situation.

Saturday night, 9 PM Eastern, National Geographic Channel. Be there. That is all.

I am pondering the possibilities: it may have been looking for love, or for squid, or for a place to pee...

Rule -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 10:23:44 PM)

It does is reminiscent of the many exploding frogs...

What next?

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 10:33:55 PM)

Frogs explode too? I had no awareness of this. Why would they do such a thing? This whole thing becomes more complicated by the hour.

And aren't we all? Really, when you get right down to it, isn't that what we're all looking for in life? Love, squid, and a place to take a leak? I feel a strange sort of empathy for this lonely whale...

Sorry I don't watch TV, but I do speculate. So I guess this is your lucky day.

Now let's assume first that 56 ton whales generally go wherever they damnwell please, it would be a far stretch to think that they pleased to propel themselves onto a Taiwan street, even if it were possible for them. Therefore the only logical conclusion is that someone else brought him there. Now I don't know much about the laws over there, but I would bet my britches that nobody would get away with that shit in Singapore. I am not sure if we have a law or city ordinance against it here, but I could probably find out fairly quickly.

So I imagine that it is perfectly acceptable in certain areas of Taiwan. Now don't ask me about whether you need a permit or something, I simply refuse to investigate that subject. I mean what would the search string include ? So given these facts in extance, for whatever reason there was a 56 ton whale in the middle of the street somewhere in Taiwan. I also have no idea how this relates to international law, but if they don't get the Bush clan, they will need some sort of scapegoat, so expect an investigation later, after everybody forgets about it.

But then why did the whale explode ? I mean who cares why or how he got there, why explode ? I mean if the question is raised I would assume that all the normal reasons have been ruled out, such as explosives planted somehow within the whale. If that were so there would be no questions and it would not be newsworthy.

Perhaps this is in response to the "Eat a dog, sve the planet" crowd. To illustrate that the CO2 emitted by a dog is nowhere near as bad as the methane and other volitile, and possibly flammable emanations from the corpses of these offending animals. Maybe what they mean is to eat the whole dog, or the whole whale maybe, to help the environment.

Perhaps I should write for The Onion. But right now, I just couldn't resist. Report back after watching it, or I might not stop.

The Discovery and History Channel is just getting bad. They have these shows where they have a hunt for Bigfoot or some 300 foot Squid or some 3 Headed Monster. They make it seem like they are hot on the trail of it. They spend the whole show searching for it and find nothing. The Hunt for Jessie James Treasure was lame also, who metal detects in white gloves like they did. I think the stuff they found, was things they planted in the ground ahead of time. I wonder if the Woolly Mammoth they found a few year back was a hoax.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 10:55:13 PM)

I wonder if it was a terrorist whale? A suicide bomber whale? His mission was to sneak into some busy street in Taiwan, keeping a low profile so that nobody would notice him (wearing sunglasses, probably) and then detonate the bomb he was carrying in his backpack. Right in front of the headquarters of some large whale-hunting company, perhaps.

Termyn8or -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:02:42 PM)

OOOH yeah ! Now Obama gets put in front of a world map with a 21 ounce regulation dart to decide which country to bomb now. Just like our little Bushy wooshy.

Let the fun begin. Whaddya think, Korea musta done it, bomb them. If they miss and hit all of Iran's nuclear powr plants that would be good too.

Let me know when you want the recipe for cockroach and rat soup for when we "put this behind us".

Let's hope that they do not board airplanes. Imagine an American Airlines Boeing 767 hijacked by a 56 ton sperm whale flying into one of them tall buildings in New York...

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:11:16 PM)

I'm tellin' ya, if the next time i get onto a plane, and the guy in the seat next to me is a 56-ton whale wearing a turban, I'm going to keep a pretty damned close eye on him.

Rule -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:14:42 PM)

If he isn't on the passenger list, I recommend that you watch him closely with both eyes.

heartcream -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:16:10 PM)

I find it terribly sad, a poor whale so far from home

kdsub -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:19:07 PM)

I remember seeing a YouTube piece of a rotting Sperm whale beached for days. They decided to cut it up so one man climbed on top with a long pole with a hooked blade attached. When he pierced the skin a huge explosion shot guts and fluids 50 feet in the air and over a 100-foot circle coating bystanders with rotting whale guts.

There is an amazing amount of pressure that builds in these animals as the rot and if the conditions are right they can explode with body gases. Most likely it was being transported and a bump sent a sharp piece of hauling equipment through the skin setting off the explosion or someone pierced the skin with a sharp implement of some kind.

Oops, there goes out of the window our nifty hypothesis of a terrorist whale with sunglasses and a turban walking the streets of Taiwan and boarding a United Airlines Boeing 767 heading for New York and destiny.

stella41b -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/25/2009 11:27:35 PM)

Panda, you don't think someone had stuck their finger up its anus trying to pacify it, do you?

That trick only works with bears, not sperm whales. But you never know, some passer by seeing the whale might have decided to try, and the whale might have had bad wind, and it might have been at a bad time, and you know.. well er... BANG!

Marc2b -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/26/2009 8:31:53 AM)

It's not the first time a whale has blown up.

Of course, the first time can be directly attributed to human stupidity.

thornhappy -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/26/2009 3:27:19 PM)

It's a rerun - the original broadcast was several months ago.  So some of us are wise to the ways of exploding terrorist whales in Taiwan.

Lucylastic -> RE: Anyone Else Curious About This? (12/26/2009 4:35:08 PM)

and there was methinking it was the whale from HHGTTG ..but didnt he turn into a potted geranium or something before touchdown?

I did watch the whale they cut up on an irish beach, absolutely fascinating, when they found that the whale has a vestigial foot? (animal autopsy I think was the series) totally absorbed in it I was...
Hubby has me hoooked on the David Attenborough Life series, the advances in photography makes it an amazing show.
I believe someone posted the clip of the leopard seal trying to feed the camera guy a penguin, there are so many wonderful scenes in that series...the whales, flying fish, the polar bears, the frogs, all of them are just so incredibly well shot and informative.
oh by the way, Im loving alll the quirky quips and ideas, some of you guys are just sooo funny

I don't know which one, but I'm sure he had a porpoise.

As Lewis Carroll pointed out, saying you're going on a journey, and people ask, "With what porpoise?"
