Its a special pot used in cooking.  It comes either as enamel or cast iron (the cast iron one can be used in outdoor cooking surrounded with embers).

Christmas eve, we had wieners and potato salad, which is traditional in many German families.

Today was the big "battle" day, the whole family at our place. My sons were responsible for starters and dessert (and put in a lot of work), I provided the main course and the surroundings.
Starters were "the worlds best" garlic bread, mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil with olive oil and balsamico, and teeny tiny tomatoes filled with prawns in cocktail or yoghurt dill garlic sauce.
Then we had beef tenderloin and porkloin medallions, spƤtzle and bread dumplings, green bean packages baked with tomatoes, onions, and garlic, and chanterelle with bacon and onions. One simple beef gravy, one creamy green pepper sauce.
A cheese tray and a moment to let it all settle down a bit, before we had portwine cream for dessert.

Tomorrow, on the second day of Christmas (traditionally, in Germany Christmas starts of with Christmas eve, and lasts the next two days) we will have a traditional Christmas dinner of roast goose, potato dumplings, gravy, and red cabbage with apples. Dessert will be vanilla bean icecream with hot cherry sauce, and starters will be the leftovers from todays starters.

And then we will drop into a food induced coma. [:D]

So, from what you're saying, I'm guessing that Sunday would be the best day for the rest of us to all get together and invade Germany? Sounds like we can just stroll in and swallow it whole.

Who's in? We can use my Subaru.

I fear that in most families, ours included, the coma will come to an end early sunday morning, when the kids rise and copious amounds of new toys will need a finall assembly, games (board and electronic) need playing, bikes will want to be taken for first rides and so forth.
Most people are on holidays till at least January the 2nd, and it is quality time for many families. (In fact, I keep numbering the days as Christmas days till New Years Eve).

So, while an invasion on the 3rd day of Christmas might not be successful, as we will be bleary eyed, round bellied, and maybe slightly hungover, but awake, you are welcome to come over for a round of gaming, while I sit here, still stunned and slightly weepy each time I contemplate the size of the new bike my oldest found under the tree. (I can not ride it. He is now as tall as I am, but has longer legs. 1,60m, and it was only-already his 10th birthday on monday.)

This year's menu included passive-aggressive sniping, sarcasm, disdain... and no alcohol.  I left as soon as I could manage, and came home and opened a bottle of wine.

When I walk in to my sister's house carrying two pies (that my kinkster friends swooned over at Thanksgiving) and I get a sneer and a "oh.... I didn't know YOU were bringing PIES", you know there is not nearly enough alcohol in the WORLD to put up with that shit.

Families.  Sometimes they just suck.

Hey, CalifChick...boy, did you strike a chord for me!

After 30 odd years of observing/participating in that sort of thing, I up & moved 2000+ miles away....& left NO forwarding address!

I'm totally not kidding either.

The holidays might be a tad lonely, but damned if they aren't peaceful & filled with the surprising warmth & good cheer of strangers. I have even, over the years, accumulated a select & precious "family of choice" who actually say nice things to each other (& me) when we gather together!

Speaking of gathering, the man & I made turkey, stuffing, baked sweet potatoes sprinkled with brown sugar &/or cinnamon, french-cut green beans with cheese sauce, & cranberry jelly for dinner. THEN we went to a friend's place & had all sorts of whore's d'ovaries (ok, not very funny, but I'm laughing!) until I could no longer hold my head up. She's always such a great hostess....she even had ribbon candy, which I haven't seen in years!

Happy holidays to all!

Punch, Cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, olives and pickles, chips and dip, shrimp wrapped w/bacon, deviled eggs, shrimp scampi, cheese fondue, crab rangoons, pot stickers, beef fondue, ham, cookies and apple pie. I know I am missing something, but I can't think of it. This thread is making me real hungry.

I want an invite to sandra's. I haven't had roast goose for years. And I'm not allowed to not make a standing rib roast with Yorkshire Pudding.
