Mom Feeds Family on $4/Week

I'm sure this doesn't work everywhere, but none the less, it's pretty amazing.

Neat as hell.

The sad part of that is all I saw was a lot of, really bad for you, processed foods.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Mom Feeds Family on $4/Week (12/23/2009 7:49:12 PM)

I saw that she bought 7 fish items all at less than a pound each. Is she making gumbo? Six people aren't going to have a meal of 1/4 pound total of perch. And as LT says a good amount of the stuff was things like Oodles of Noodles and tons of paper products. I'm all for saving money, but spending 2 hours a week going through circulars and coupons and she probably shops at several different stores, what about the gas she spends getting to all of them?

The whole key to shopping with coupons is buying things that you will actually eat, not stocking you pantry in case of a national disaster.

Wow...  I'm impressed at the fact she was able to do that, but I also would like to know how much time she spends per week, clipping the coupons and going through that 'stash' of coupons and circulars she has in that little closet.

It's entirely doable.

That woman could make good money doing that with a little organization.

The newspapers will sell you the out of date newspapers for cheap.

If she bought those and made packets identical to her own, she could sell them prepackaged for like 30.00 a piece. Then lazier people (me), could still save a 200 bucks instead of 230.00.  I'm sure she could get 20 families to participate in any size town in america, so she'd make 600.00 dollars for doing very little extra work. As the bulk of the work is simply identifying the combination which she is already doing.

But could you imagine just how annoying it would be to be the guy in line behind her at the checkout as she goes through all her coupons & the negotiations......

Word to the wise- at the grocery, get in line behind the guy with a 12 pack of beer and box of trojans. Guaranteed that he'll pay cash and not stop to chat with the checkout clerk! [:D]

Actually, there are quite a few coupon purchasing and swap places that do just that...  Red Plum and Smart Source also offer a good portion of their coupons on the web for printing as well.

If she did it enough to make good money, the stores would likely change their coupon policies and ruin the whole deal. This way, at least she gets to feed her kids.

Hardly. As was mentioned above, there are already websites that specialize in such things, and some of them are pay sites that provide lists of in store specials and printable coupons to their members. People are already making good money from showing others how to maximize coupons and offers, and the stores haven't revolted, or even objected just yet... although I bet a few checkers cringe when the spot the "coupon queen" regulars in their line, lol.

It takes work to do this, and many families don't have the time NOR do they have the want to take hours a week to figure out how to save money for their families. Our society is a convenience society, not a save money society. Even people who are on food stamps or are off work or on unemployment still focus on convenience instead of saving money because MOST PEOPLE in our society were taught convenience instead of how to save money with a little bit of effort on their part.

i could easily have saved all the money i needed for a trip to jamaica again this year (approx 5000 with airfare and a beach front room) however, i like convenience which costs more money and i also am the type of person who LEAVES or asks the clerk to throw away all those lil pieces of paper with coupons and such on them cause i always forget them or lose them.

angel

This family has determined her doing this effort is WORTH it for them. Most people don't see the worth.
