. . .  is extremely expensive in the UK, and I wouldn't mind betting it's likewise elsewhere.  Over cold periods, pipes burst because of the formation of ice - which expands .  You do not want to be calling out a plumber on Christmas Day for a burst pipe.  You'll still be paying for it out of your wages in February.

The simple answer is to get a) some jubilee clips of various sizes (whatever they're called in the USA, Canada, Aus . . .  I don't know - go a-googling) and a cycle inner tube.  Total cost about £7.   You simply wrap a cut section of inner tube around the leaking pipe or joint, then screw the jubilee clips in at each end.  It'll hold till you can get a plumber at standard rates after New Year's Day.

You have not been charged for this advice.

Is this your way of telling us that you've gotten wet, peon?

Sounds like what we call a hose-clamp.

The Man does his own plumbing repairs and all other such household items including a new garage door opener which we will need soon.

Unfortunately he also does car repairs which is cheaper when he does it but takes a lot longer.

Yep, those are the babies, Kirata.  Very useful indeed for plumbing.  Over here, you'd need 1 inchers and half-inchers for offshoot pipes.

One way to avoid burst pipes altogether is to leave the tap open enough for water to pass thru....moving water shouldn't freeze.....this works....having grown up in upstate NY during some of the coldest winters on record, I do know of what I speak!

I never, ever, get wet, LP.  I'm so cool and dry I came out of the womb wearing a tuxedo and dancing a perfect tango.  I don't even get wet when I get in the bath.  You know all this to be the truth.

get some foam tubing or styrofoam tubing and wrap it around any exposed pipes, with duct tape ...  that works too.

*pondering peon in a tux..*

Actually that is a professional repair in FL, USA. The houses are built on a slab of concrete and getting to the plumbing is impossible, so that's the way it is, and generally that's the way it stays.

well, up here in the great tundras of the north, long before we worry about freezing a pipe, we wrap it with heat tape...........lets go to the dirty pictures of options:

There is also a heat tape.  One plugs it in to heat.  That is not always convenient to wrap. The foam is cheap and easy to do.
