Hi all,

Sorry to bother you, but I have the feeling that somebody is having me on in a bit of a sadistic joke, and I want to start seeing if I can verify parts of the story I've been told.  So, could somebody with experience in the UK scene please look at this and tell me if I'm being led on here?

The story I was given was:

[14:31] [Deleted]: I don't know I've never been pregnant, my tubes were tied for me without my consent a long time ago.
[14:31] [Me]: Ouch.
[14:31] [Me]: How did that happen?
[14:32] [Deleted]: I'm not an American.  I was born in the U.K. and BDSM over there has been around much, much longer and it can be at times harsher.  Before I was a Mistress, I was a slave.  My owner got me when I was 14.  He didn't want me to ever have a baby from all the sex I was going to have under him, so he had a doctor friend of his tie my tubes so I could never get pregnant.
[14:33] [Me]: How the hell was that legal?
[14:34] [Deleted]: You think too much like an American and protected here under all your laws and rules.  Overseas things are much more direct and still steeped in old traditions and old ways and where a girl still really has no say in what happens to her.  My family called it a marriage, and young girls being married off to older men are normal in many countries still and is still legal though once I was with my "husband" he informed me that I was now his slave and he was my Master.

[14:41] [Deleted]: Yes.  Of course, once my family discovered the true nature of my "marriage" they could not do anything for the embarressment would have...the scandal would have been too much.  My Master kept me for a time, played his games with me, and when I became too old he gave me money and allowed me to leave.  It was then I swore I would never be a slave again.
[14:41] [Deleted]: I imagine he found another young girl to be his play thing

As I said - is this something plausible in the UK?  Or is this a case where somebody's trying to lead me by the nose?

I first noticed the time codes on the left; to me this indicates it has the implausibility of a typical chat room/IM conversation.

To clarify - this is the back story given to me some time ago by somebody involved in something a lot larger, and not involving money.

But, it does involve a fair bit of time spent trying to do something else (which I would rather not say in public, just in case the person in question happens to be on here), and if it is a joke, then I think it's a particularly sociopathic one.

You really know how to spread those crumbs just thin enough for the birds to start fighting over them, don't you? If you're not going to tell the whole story, then what the hell does it matter if we think it's fake or not, since we don't even know what the story is?

It sounds more like someone's idle erotic fantasy.
Human trafficking does in fact happen in Eastern Europe, genital mutilation is common in underveloped parts of Africa, but the survivors usually don't end up chatting on BDSM websites. I doubt they shroud their horrific experiences in the language and jargon of kinky sex lifestyles.

The "things are much different in Europe" is 9 times out of 10 a bullshit alert, a lead in to the "old Houses of Europe" line. It preys upon American's ignorance of history and other cultures.

Confidentiality is important in some cases, and this is one of them.  If somebody here wants to know more, then they can contact me in private, and I will discuss it with them if it seems appropriate to do so.  But right now what I need is to find out if this tall tale I've been told is just a tall tale, as I have a feeling it is, or if it's one of those unbelievable things that happens all too often in life.

as a UK citizen born and bred, I can tell you now that it's a pile of crap. Whoever wrote it has been reading far too much badly-written 'erotic' fiction and has clearly never been to the UK. The laws over here regarding personal safety, consent and health are just as robust as in the US. Looks like they're spinning you a line!

Tall tale. The marriageable age in the UK was set at it's current minimum of 16 with parental permission, 18 without, in 1929. If she got married before then, sure, she could have been married off at 14. What the doctor did would have been illegal no matter what, and he'd have to be fairly forward thinking since tubal ligation wasn't commonly used 'til the start of the 20th century and at that time hardly ever for routine contraception. Common sense, use it.

It *could* happen in the UK..............it *could* happen anywhere.......but her assertions have nothing to do with the UK. We have rules and laws as well, and girls have as much *say* as they do in the US. I'm afraid she's talking through her hat when she says......."Overseas things are much more direct and still steeped in old traditions and old ways and where a girl still really has no say in what happens to her."

 Being even-handed, it might well be HER experience, but she's talking as if it's some kind of norm and it really isn't.

there are nutters everywhere and its plausible that this woman bumped into one, definitely. she was very young at the time and if it is true its a very sad story. if that was her reality and its the world she still moves in then her 'view' of it all is biased.

i bumped into a nutter when i was 21 - i managed to wriggle free but it took injunctions and the police to finally stop him.

but like agirl says, this could happen anywhere. there are dark and dismal corners in this world and a great many of them reside inside people.

Well being an european, but not British (the difference neglectable in this case) I would say the story is totally implausible. But on the other hand if somebody had told me about canibalisme in Germany i would say the same, and that did happen. But the afterramifications of this story if true would send somebody in jail. A doctor would loose his license and if that was a "known" family would be the scandal of the century. The girl would end up very rich, not only on a damage claim but also from selling her story to the press. Look at the two Austrian cases.

Not to single you out or anything, but this tells me 2 things. As a grad student you should have developed analytical and critical thinking skills. As a writer, you should be able to identify if a story holds itself together.

Those are your skills. Use them. :-)
