Here's the scenerio:

Two people have cell phones. Both have each other's numbers plus 2 other like numbers programmed in their phones (they know the same people). How is it possible for one to call the other and make it look like the call is coming from one of the other two people?

I got pissed at a co-worker I used to hang out with outside of work and hung up. When my co-worker called back my caller id showed my roommate was calling me but it was my co-worker. Later I got another call and my caller id showed my boss was calling. Once again it wasn't my boss, but my co-worker. How is my co-worker able to do that?

It's called caller id spoofing. There are websites online that someone can use or programs they can download that will allow someone to call you while showing your caller id as someone else.

Impossible. My roommate doesn't like my co-worker. I have call waiting. I was actually talking to my roommate during his break at work and another call came in with my caller id saying it was my roommate. My roommate does not work at the same place my co-worker and I work.

Caller id spoofing? I had never heard of it until now. Well that explains it I guess. Thanks.

My daughter does this all the time to her younger sister.

example:

quote:

New Message from: Mommy
The zoo called and wants you back.

*sigh*

anyway. You can tell who it actually came from by opening the message and going to 'extract data' under options.

There is an option right on the phone that allows you to change your 'number' temporarily, so by entering your roommates number, it appears the call is coming from them.. Definitely doesn't need to be paid for.

ETA: oops, yours was a call. I'm pretty sure it works the same way.
