I knew that there was to be some show on German TV about the Kindertransport, the train ride that took Jewish children from Germany to England, and I thought that it would mention my Uncle Dick, who was nine when he took it.
Well, it turns out that the show was ABOUT him! I'm still floored!
I had known that he was split from his family by the Kindertransport but not much more. He since got a PhD, taught Biochem at the University of Syracuse for years, and and retired from there. He has a pronounced British accent and a sprightly manner and in retirement works as a volunteer DJ on a local classical music station - he has been recognized in supermarkets due to his voice.
He married a black woman in the early 1960s. You younger folks may not realize how shocking that was back then. (They're still married.)
Don't be fooled by the somber pics. He's actually one of the most cheerful people I've ever known.
