I have this great guy visiting and we are wasting time trying to get us both hooked up online through a router so we can continue with what we need to do and after two different routers and companies and a couple days I am ready to scream. I went to the phone tech for Linksys and was sent to India.. there the man wants all my personal info, to take over my computer from afar so that he can change settings and get us hooked up all for the inexpensive ten dollars they want with my credit card number and all that. We bought at BestBuy and they told us there was tech support if needed. They are not answering phones until later today and we are stuck still.

We put the install cd in and it told us how to connect everything and it is connected fine. It is according to the tech in India, an incompatability between the vista or my settings. My settings are there for security reasons for the most part... but they want ten dollars and to take over the machine. I am sorry... but I just paid a utility bill with a card and a couple days later, someone is trying to charge my card for over five hundred dollars at a tenis shoe web site. My new card is in the mail and even if I wanted to, there is no way I can use a card because of the previous fraud issue.

When I told the man I had no card because of the fraud, he didn't say a word... just was gone.

What do you think of this and is there anyone who can help me? We have schooling for my guy and important business... besides fun at CM that we must do and we need to both be up and running here.

Help?

Wow! First off I'm sorry for the mess you're dealing with. That sounds really fishy to me. I have a Linksys router and several wireless cards and have never run into that when I've called their support for walkthroughs to set it up. I've never been charged or told there'd be a charge from them except for one time and that was because the equipment I was calling for help on I'd had for over a year at that time. I've never had them want to take over my computer via remote access either. Something is way off about this. I wish I could help, but I don't have any ideas and I'm running XP pro on mine, not Vista. I hope someone can help you out with this.

Need more info.....

You have Vista.....what OS does he have?

Are you simply trying to get both pc's online?

Or are you try to get both to talk together thru the router?

I call Linksys frequently as part of my job and I have never had to pay for help. Generally that pay for option is for hardware issues and not setup issues. That guy who told you Vista and Linksys are not compatible is a douche. Vista has been out for 3 yrs.. practically everything is compatible, unless it was used on anything under win 2000.

If you are going to go wireless, you can set it up as a secured network, or if that is too hard, unsecured will do, although people in the area will be able to log on using your access.
If you do choose a secured network we like to tell people to use their phone number as their log in code, all 10 digits, so they will never forget what code they used.

Have you accessed your router through the web??
You might need to manually add his computer to the router

It's my laptop that is the second computer concerned here. I have vista too, but it is the more recent version. We're both hard-wired now and hers(desk-top) is running slowly on this site, but mine is pretty close to normal speed. We were wanting to have the wireless option so my puter would be usable all over the home.

Have one pc plugged in,  open the IE on that pc, the default IP for linksys router is 192.168.1.1  (type the address in IE and press enter heh) I'm guessing the user and passw are admin in both cases.

try to access the other pc through wireless and check and see if you don't see the reason why the router is blocking the wireless access.
It's probably the firewall.

or ..with the laptop plugged in..access the router from it and see if there's an option to add the laptop so the firewall won't stop it :)

MasterG2kTR- Yes, we're trying to get both machines working online at the proper speed. I'm not sure what "talking together through the router" means, but as long as we can both be online at the same time we'll be satisfied. Nothing fancy

Her machine will access the other side of this site, but won't even load the message board side of CM. I'm having no problems so far.

What type of linksys router?
I just sold my one, but it should easily be able to do what you want.

Are both your vista firewalls disabled ( only have the one in your router enabled/HArdware firewalls are better)
Did you try to connect with your antivirus/antispyware disabled disabled?

subtlebutterfly- I don't think we've made it that far yet. lol. We put the set-up wizard cd in her puter, and went through the first four set up procedures which just told us how to set the router up to the modem It's wired correctly, but the wizard is still teling us that it's not connected right. At that point- we then called their tech support, and got the guy from India who wanted to charge us 10 bucks. This is all the further we've made it..lol.

The best way to solve a problem with a Linksys router is to return it and get a different brand. In fact, in my experience, it's the only way.

Lockit, what you're describing is exactly the same shit I had to put up with a year ago when I bought a Linksys. I went through two different routers and god knows how many phone calls with people who spoke absolutely no English at all, who all wanted me to pay them 10 dollars to take over my computer (yeah, right - I can't understand a word you say, you clearly don't understand a word I'm saying, and I'm going to let you fuck around inside my hard drive?). I finally took the piece of shit back to Best Buy, exchanged it for a Belkin, installed it in a half hour, and never had a problem since. In my experience, Linksys routers are complete crap and they have some of the absolute worst, most utterly incomprehensible customer support I've ever encountered. I'll never buy another Linksys product again.

Thanks Panda and Butterfly. lol-- I'm sure that most of this problem is simply because neither one of us knows much about this stuff. Linksys is the second brand we tried. We went Belkin first and couldn't get it to work, so a family member said to go buy a linksys. lol. I'd rather be getting a good spanking than messing around with this stuff..*grin*

The older wrt54(gs) routers contained linux and had modded firmwares....for their time ( and even now) are on of the best.
Just not for the average computer user.

The fact that you have slightly different versions of Vista should have no impact on what you are attempting.

Butterfly was right in post #7 with that info you can access the firmware settings to see if there is a stumbling block there.

Try hardwiring the laptop to the router to make sure it is communicating properly at that level.

Also go to Control Panel and check Network Connections to make sure you have communication working there. To do that Right Click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. You should have the following:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
File and Printer Sharing (this one is optional)
QoS Packet Scheduling

If these are not present, click the Install button and select them from the list.

Next go to the Advanded tab there and check your firewall settings.

As an exercise in futility, re-do your Wireless Network Setup Wizard on the laptop. Make certain that the Network name is typed in correctly! If it doesn't have a name yet you should give it one.

One last thing you can do is to make sure you have the latest & greatest drivers for your network card.

Some of the above may vary in Vista as I am running XP Pro, but should still have similarity.

ETA: I missed where you said your laptop is working ok....except for the Wireless Wizard all of the above still applies

We can still hard-wire both computers, but when I try to access through wireless, the discovery system says the settings saved on my laptop do not meet the requirements for the network. Yet I can can still pick up the neighbors' systems and could access them if I had their passwords. I don't know if Lockits system is set up correctly or if my computer is needing something. I've never run across a problem like this with my wi-fi before so I doubt if it's my machine.

It could be a problem with the encryption key..in some security systems you can only use certain letters of the alphabet and certain digits in the password so the one you have may not match what the router allows. Linksys would have to provide you a new encryption key.

also... with one connected and the other on wifi
right click the network connection --> properties --> security tab
check and see if there's the same security type & key on the wi-fi  and the hard-wire one, that could also be the problem.

I did that Butterfly.  I don't have anything set on my machine, and have needed to. I think she needs to go to their online site and subscribe(for a fee) as it keeps prompting her to do. There's most likely something simple that W/we keep overlooking.....

I had a WRT54GS for years, had to trade up when I got fast (20mb) broadband tho, the poor thing couldn't cope!

Check the security settings on your wireless: 192.168.1.1 in your browser  - and look for the wireless security settings - the simplest but least secure way of doing it is by setting NO security.

Once you can get online using wireless with No security, enable....I'd suggest WPA protection, as that can be accessed using a pass-phrase in regular english, rather than gobbledigook).

As someone else says, make sure you turn off both PC's firewalls, you really don't need 'em.

And for god's sake, get a decent operating system (says the Linux geek) [:D]


If you're both happy working with a wired connection, do this, and I'm sure you'll both be up to full speed:

Turn both PC's and the router off....if you have a separate modem, turn that off too. Then switch on in this order: Modem (if present) - wait for all the lights to switch on, router (wait for the lights to settle down), PC's.

Should be all you need to do.
