I'm totally opposed to spiders. There's just something thoroughly wrong about them, on all levels.

I don't mind spiders too much and as long as they stay in obscure, out of the way places I tend to leave them alone. But when they start invading my space...

That's probably exactly how they feel about you! Too bad for them, they don't have a big shop vac handy.

Boy, and if they ever solve that  one, we are just completely fucked.

Surprisingly not scary actually. It reminds me more of a scorpion, and scorpions while extremely dangerous, look cool as hell.

Dangerous? there's only a handful that are remotely life threatening and those types are in parts of the world where a life threatening scorpion is the last of your worries

PyrotheClown -> RE: Spiders (11/26/2009 10:10:22 PM)

Funny story, back in high school I used to keep scorpions as pets(we get the big yellow hairys out here, that's actually what they're called too)had one that would just chill on my finger, like a ring(hence her name...finger), would take it to school from time to time, and when people would ask if it were real or not, I'd pull her off my finger and watch both her and them freak out hehe

I just looked at your profile to determine what far-off, exotic land you're talking about. Now, when you say "here," does that mean this big-hairy-yellow-scorpion business takes place in California? Because as someone who's probably moving out there soon, I have to say that doesn't sound encouraging.

winterlight -> RE: Spiders (11/26/2009 11:39:36 PM)

I don't like Spiders. Yes, i realize they kill the other insects etc.

I had a friend get bit by a spider when she was putting her pants on. It had crawled inside during the night. She got bitten and she ended up having a chunk of her inside thigh area taken out.
I imagine it was a recluse.

Around here if i see one i kill it because my poor cat got bit in the face and i had a really nice sized bill from that. His face puffed up and got infected. I couldn't tell because he has long hair.
Recluses are bad bites to get. I don't know if a recluse got him or not. It required knocking him out to even get near his face. He was under the age of 2 when that happened.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 12:00:12 AM)

When I was a kid, I got nailed by a recluse two summers in a row. I didn't like it. The first year, he got me in the knee, which was bad enough... but the next summer, the little fucker got me on my finger, and I damned near lost my hand. Excruciatingly painful for what seemed like weeks. I don't like them, and I wish they'd all win the lottery or something so they could afford to just move to some other planet or something.

AquaticSub -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 12:38:07 AM)

Awww... that sucks! *hugs*

Yeah, I got bitten by a recluse in 1998, one that came in in packing boxes.  I almost lost one side of my face.   Thankfully, I had read something about them in a Reader's Digest years back, one good thing to come from being a geeky kid.  I had to be really proactive about treating it, since all the local doctors were clueless, and won't call it a brown recluse bite unless they see the spider....well, he kinda crawled away in the night.....  It took several months before it cleared up completely.  They're bad news little bastards......and so are the spiders. [;)]

Aneirin -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 7:12:12 AM)

I have taken great pleasure in crunching a camel spider though, it took a few goes, but it finally stopped moving, creepy things, but not technically a spider, and they are camouflaged too, only their movement gives them away.

sirsholly -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 7:16:05 AM)

the only good spider is a dead spider

This is interesting. They appear in a lot of mythologies. In Africa, Anansi the Spider is a storyteller. In Greek/Roman mythology Arachne and Minerva competed with weaving and Arachne was turned into a spider. The three fates are associated with spinning and therefore also Arachne. And our language always uses "spinning" and "weaving" whenever we talk about storytelling, magic, spells etc. Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty is associated with the spider and fate, and of course Sleeping Beauty pricks her finger on a spindle.

...and here we are discussing them on the world wide WEB

heartcream -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 11:35:58 PM)

Spider bites are quite yuck but I do not hate spiders. I dont kill them. I dont flip out when I see one. In Australia I was freaked out by the giant Huntsman spiders that hang around quite often. They are large and brown and apparently benign but very frightening in size.

There are lots of insects that I cant stand but spiders are not one of them.

EbonyWood -> RE: Spiders (11/27/2009 11:40:02 PM)

Erm , just so you know..and I'm not trying to be picky, but just for future reference....

Spiders are not insects.

Enjoy.
