ok..I love this movie and have watched it over and over
BUT I don't get it..

DID he kill eventually?.for love?
Was he the killer?
DID he begin to be of the lifestyle?and "cross over" and that's when he killed?
or am I completely out to lunch here??

According to imbd, it is confusing because in order to gain an R rating, they cut 40 minutes of film that was mainly sadomasochistic play/sex. And you need the lost footage for it to make sense. However the studio was so appalled by the pictures, they destroyed that footage.

I did not know that..I find the movie fascinating but very confusing..

I felt ..a hidden part of himself was liberated during his undercover operation..in fact many HIDDEN parts..including sexual orientation...BDSM desires and more

I do know the famous fisting scene caused a big up roar

google it or check wikipedia..has a bunch in there.
The movie *may be* about homophobia..may be about hidden desires..any be about hetero weirdness...

I harken back to it because at age at 18 it was my first exposure to BDSM visuals....wow
