A love-struck buck ran out of luck a week ago.

The seven-point buck was killed when it rammed a 640-pound concrete statue of an elk in the backyard of Mark and Carol Brye's home in rural Viroqua, Wis. Bucks often fight during the breeding season, commonly called the rut. Dominant bucks defend breeding territories and female deer by sparring with subordinate bucks. Antler battles sometimes result in the death of one or both deer, but usually end with the biggest buck winning and the smaller buck high-tailing it out to another area. Mark Brye, who owns Brye Plumbing in Viroqua, was still laughing about the suicidal buck he found near his elk statue last week.

Brye said his morning ritual is to rise early and look out at the life-like statue about 40 yards from his home.

"Our son and daughter gave it to us for Christmas four years ago because we like to hunt elk," Brye said. "The elk is a nice thing to see every morning. It looks pretty cool, especially on a foggy morning."

Brye said he knew exactly what happened when he saw the statue tipped over. Although they were about the same height, the statue weighed at least three times more than the 180-pound deer.

He didn't realize the buck lay dead a short distance away. "I could tell the buck poked the statue a couple of times by the chipped paint on it," Brye said, adding that the buck eventually rammed it like a mountain goat. The buck apparently staggered about 20 feet and fell.

Brye claimed  the buck with a tag from the Vernon County conservation warden. He laughed at the warden's tag note: "lawn ornament fight — lost."

Brye said the deer shattered its skull. The antlers were still on its head but were dangling. "The statue is OK, but the antlers broke off when it tipped over," Brye said. "One side of the antlers is in one piece, but the other side is in five pieces." Brye, 58, is considering removing the antlers from the unlucky buck and gluing them on the elk statue as a remembrance of the strange but true story.

The deer is butchered and in Brye's freezer. The elk remains on its side. "I can't tip it back up until I get a whole bunch of guys to help me," he said.

Can't decide if this way to go is better or worse than jumping into the lion enclosure at the National Zoo.

Okay. . . why didn't they let the lions eat the deer?  That confuses me.

From a Washington Post chat with columnist John Kelly:

John Kelly: I just called the National Zoo to ask them that very question. Why didn't they let the lions eat the deer? The concern was that the deer might be harboring some disease. It could even have been rabid, and rabid lions wandering Washington is the LAST thing we need. All the food that comes to the zoo is specially provided by sources that can guarantee its safety. And the lions eat pretty well, which is why they seemed more to be playing with the deer than hunting it.

Any animal that is found dead in the zoo is tested. A necropsy is performed, whether it be a raccoon a bird or a deer.

Now, some animals do get live prey. Live crickets and mealworms are fed to birds and reptiles. Feeder fish--typically goldfish--also go to birds and reptiles. The tentacle snake only eats goldfish. Some birds and reptiles get live mice. The otters and fishing cats occasionally get live fish. Some of the feed isn't for nutrition so much as for "enrichment." It helps the animals use their brains and their bodies. The lions, however, only get the dead stuff.

Years ago the ex and I would go to Maine and try to photograph moose in the wild. Reminds me of the time we're in the car, slowly following a young cow hoping she'd turn and we could snap a picture. The ex glanced into the rear view mirror and there's a bull moose following us, getting ready to charge the car because he wanted the girl. Pulled car over to side and held our breath as he came up and glared in the window at us. Finally decided she was more important then teaching a Chevette to get out of his way.

Not just rabies but chronic wasting disease, which is a prion disease. Started in Colorado, and has since spread around the nation.

This sounds like the Darwin awards of the Animal Kingdom.

AWWWWWWWW... this makes me sad!  I just posted a warning to people in my area to be careful of deer on the roads.

Indeed, Miss. I just hope it didn't suffer before dying. I also hope the statue is gone so it cannot happen again.

It's rutting season here, too.  I saw 6 dead deer along the road this past week.

Sounded like they're planning to keep the statue:

"Brye said the deer shattered its skull. The antlers were still on its head but were dangling. "The statue is OK, but the antlers broke off when it tipped over," Brye said. *shakes head* This is just sad, given that this has already happened and may well happen again. I just hope that this was a one-off and there is no repeat of this incident.

Apparently they've had the statue for years and this is the first occasion of a buck attacking it.
