Marc2b -> RE: It's Veteran's Day (11/11/2009 6:38:27 AM)

You know how almost every war movie has the "coward" character, like Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis) in Saving Private Ryan? Well, in a combat situation that would probably be me. There I'd be, curled into a fetal position, screaming my head off:

"Ahhhhhh! They're shooting! Save me God! I'm sorry I whacked off in my sister's closet when I was twelve! I sorry I put the cat in the washing machine! I thought he'd enjoy it, you know, like a ride! Whose dumb fuck idea was war anyway? I want my mommy! Ahhhhh!"

So, to all those brave men and women whose service spares me that humiliation: A heartfelt thank you.

We call it Rememberance day in the UK and Canada, Ive been wearing a canadian poppy and a english poppy  for the past few days, but Im in no way limiting my sentiments to UK and Canadians, but to all who have come home and those whose lives were ended, but are still in our hearts and minds.  To all we have lost , to all who still serve,  Thank you.
Marc said it really well. I couldnt do it either.
Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

ETA Damn Greedy hon that pic brought tears to my eyes.....Im always emotional on Nov 11, now if I hear "last post " I will fall apart

estah -> RE: It's Veteran's Day (11/11/2009 9:44:02 AM)

Greetings,
Thank you.

I would like to add a poem that always moves me to tears...

For The Fallen
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end they remain.

-- Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

I think this counts for all soldiers, regardless of what land they called home. Those who have died lay together in the arms of mother earth and now watch those of us who remain at the side of HaShem/G-d.

Thank you to those who have fought, lived and died to give us the freedoms we have today.

verity

*Stands quietly as the last call is sounded.*

Lest we forget, lest we forget.
