I received an email yesterday from facebook congratulating me on my new account. Strange thing, I didn't open a new account and I already have a facebook account attached to the same email. In the past 12 hours, I've received numerous notices in my email of friend requests and confirmations from people I don't know. The account that I signed up for is still there, with none of this activity on it. I figure this is something nefarious, but I'm not quite sure how to shut it down. Suggestions or ideas?

I just had something similar happen to me yesterday. I recieved an email that said "so and so has requested you as a friend on Facebook."

I do not have a face book account. I've never even been to the Facebook website. I've no interest in it whatsoever.

I figured it had to be a scam (or perhaps a virus) of some sort and deleted the email without opening it.

If anybody does know what it 's all about, It would be interested to know.

Check the address that sent it?  It should be from register-at-facebook.
Don't open any attachments or any address that it gives you.  Unless you confirm a registration, you shouldn't get any invites, so they will all be bogus.

Whatever it is, I think it's trying to harvest my facebook password.

You can always foward it to info-at-facebook so they can see the fake mails send out warnings to others.  Don't open attatchments or confirm any passwords - which you are already aware of.  Sounds like you have done the correct thing.

I get those all day long every single day. They're phishing. Delete unread.

I get these as well from a variety of places.   I just delete them.  I am not a huge fan over facebook- myspace and those types of sites.

Interesting. Thanks for the link. The gmail spam filter protects me from so much of this junk, I forget how common it is.

Yes, we even get them here on our work emails.

My all time favourite though is the one from the 'IRS'.......all serious and legitimate looking. If I wasn't in constant contact with them via snail mail and occasional phone calls, I might have fallen for it.
