i have never been tob a hairstylist. i wash my hair 2x a week. comb out with conditioner still in hair in the shower. my hair has to be neat for work and io wear it pulled back into a bun. detangling then braiding after hair is dry helps to keep it tangle free. i part my hair and comb out any tangles from the bottom up. ends trimmed only when needed.i only dry my hair with the blower till its barely damp then allow to air dry. if youre going to be very active expect knots. having hair in a ponytail or braid helps.
enjoy your hair. i certainly enjoy mine.
fave who once rode on a motorcycle over 100mph with her hair loose and took days to untangle the resulting ratsnest

I just returned from New Zealand where as far as i could tell, i was the only person in the country with hair to my mid-back.
And silver at that! Of course, the near constant wind may have something to do with that.

I wash my hair every day with pantene pro-v for moisturing hair. I shampoo only the scalp, and moisturise the lot. I finger comb my hair after i am out and pretty much leave it to dry naturally - as in no drier. When i work i partly dry it with a hair dryer for speed. At work i keep it twisted up and clipped to the back of my head, and have to wear a surgical hat, so my hair doesn't get a chance to get tangle.

Braiding it stops it from tangling.

Stopping the parrots from "preening" me stops it from tangling as well!

It tangles a whole lot less since i have had about 3 inches trimmed off - the split ends enable tangling, and once they were gone, so for the most part were the tangles.
Its a bit of trouble, but Sir loves my hair and its colour, and i enjoy it being long. I have people stop me and tell me how beautiful my hair is, so i am doing something right.

I've seen your hair and it really is thick. I think a good braid would be helpful. I do that with Thing 2's hair often.

Remark re: get a professional to cut your growing out hair which will make your hair longer in the long run was directed to the OP, not to zephyr.

Thankies all you sweetnesses! I hope to get that trim this week and hopefully get a french braid put in that will last the better part of the week. Then try out conditioners, goops, and equipment until I find what works. It is a bit of a fuss for now, but the smile on my partner's face is well worth it.

ARGH! NO NO NO NO!

Do not get a tight french braid! More chance of breakage. Plus leaving it in so long is just icky. Then there is morning "fuzz-head."

Learn to french braid your own hair. Yes, it takes some time to learn proficiency at it. It is really not that hard, though. I am sure that there is a youtube video.
