I've been pleased with L'anza hair products.  If you use the ones that are right for your hair (they have several lines), it helps keep the hair shaft healthy and decreases tangling without leaving residue.  Shiny, healthy, more manageable.  I always want to know the pH balance of the products, makes a big difference.  Personally, these days, I'm pleased with their "Strengthen" shampoo and conditioner.  See if you can find a deal on it though, like the promos, where they sell a litre of each for cheaper.  L'anza was taken over by other owners, a couple of years ago, and they drove up their prices and monkeyed with a couple of the less expensive formulas.

Also, I have a couple of brushes especially good for brushing out long hair.  One of them is the best detangling tool I've ever used, so far.  It's a Goody brand-name "Ouchless" brush: http://www.goody.com/Products/Styling%20Tools/Brushes/Cushion/Cushion.aspx, with loosely-spaced, flexible, round-ended bristles sunk into a flexible cushion.  But the cushion is inside a hard shell, with the bristles sticking out of holes in the shell.  This means that your hair isn't caught on the brush, at the base of the bristles, because the base of the bristles are hidden under the hard shell.  And the bristles are firm enough to go through your hair, but flexible enough to give, instead of breaking it.

The other brush is a good quality natural boar bristle brush.  Mine is a cushion brush, with fairly long boar bristles that are firm enough to penetrate the hair, but flexible enough to give (the cushion helps with that, too) and not wear the hair out.

I use the Goody brush when my hair is wet or when I really want to penetrate the hair and detangle more quickly.  The boar bristle is for when my hair is dry, as it's good for your hair, more gentle, distributes oils, leaves a silky texture.

When you detangle, start at the ends and work your way up.

We also have been known to use horse care products which are very heavy duty conditioners. Mane & Tail isn't bad but we've switched to Hair Moisturizer by Healthy Haircare Products. They recommend 1 part moisturizer to 8 parts water. We just slowly rub it in full strength, then comb it out. Then rinse a couple of times. Available at most tack shops.

If you're going to use horse mane and tail products, though, like other heavy-duty conditioning treatment, use them just long enough for deep conditioning, then switch to a good quality human hair care line.  Those products are meant for hair much coarser than yours.  They're to penetrate that coarse hair and keep the cuticle moist, so it doesn't break and is stronger.  Over time, they're apt to leave residue on your hair and scalp, weight your hair down, and even make it a bit sticky, which will make tangling worse.

I swear by Kerastase hair products by L'Oreal. I haven't had a problem with tangles ever since starting to use them. Yes they are expensive but are soooo worth the money.

Conditioner!

One thing I picked up on this board, I think from Chia, is to not use much shampoo on the length of your hair, just on your scalp. With conditioner, put more on the length of your hair, and less on the scalp.

I find it much easier to de-tangle after a shower (with conditioning) than before a shower. Many times I've gone into the shower with massively tangled bed-head and come out almost problem-free.

I find it necessary to switch conditioners every month or so. Maybe it's all in my head (ha!), but I find that any given brand seems to work less efficiently after I've been using it for a while. I have a few different brands that I cycle through. I've tried saving money by buying cheap ($2/giant bottle) conditioner, and have found that it's not worth the savings- to some extent, you do get what you pay for. The one I come back to most often is Pantene Pro-V. Not super-expensive "salon quality", but one of the best I've found in the supermarket.

For keeping it detangled during a regular day, I use the old biker trick of doing a ponytail bound at three or four spots along the length, so only an inch or two at the very end is free to wave around. My wife prefers to braid hers. Either way makes a huge difference over a typical ponytail, especially if you're doing anything active.

Good luck!

My hair isn't long, shoulder length, but I feel your tangles pain......mine is fine, and even when I comb it out in the shower, by the time it's dried in a towel, it's a mess again.  I don't wind the hair in a towel, I just wrap it around my head......I've tried all the store brands of everything, Mane & Tail, most of the salon stuff, and nothing seems to help.  I do use the no more tangles stuff...that's about the only thing that cuts thru the tangles.  Fortunately, my hair is in pretty good condition, right now I'm using L'Oreal's new line of sulfate and salt free shampoos and conditioners cuz of my color.

It's the rat's nest mess that keeps me from growing my hair any longer than just below my shoulders.  There is no way I want to fight all that.....especially getting ready for work each day.

My daughter's hair is about 4" longer when straightened. Very coarse. But you should never use the same product all the time, you need to change it occasionally.

Hell girls how can you do this to me?
Telling me that 40+ women stil exist who carries their hair long.
The hair is the crowning glory of a woman, the more the better. I would do anything for that, also spend one hour 7 days a week combing it for her if she had it just halfway down her back.
I nearly did my nut when me ex cut my litlle girls. Well it is back over the shoulders now. But seeing a ten year old galloping on a horse, with a huge grin on her face, her long hair flowing in the wind, that is just something else.

Tantriqu -> RE: Hairy Issue (11/14/2009 12:18:52 PM)

Start with a great haircut and healthy, smooth ends. If you're 'just growing it out' or trimming the ends yourself, it will be a losing battle; damaged hair, split ends, and a cut that doesn't respect the way your hair grows naturally cause a lot of tangling and all the waxy/oily conditioners in the world won't help. If you don't have a good stylist, divorce the one your have and get one recommended by someone whose hair you admire.

PS: from a 40+ yo woman with hair halfway down her back who takes < 2 minutes to do her hair in the morning after conditioning it out of the shower at night.

Thank you Tantriqu but I do have a stylist, in fact she is so absolutely fantastic that I won't tell anyone who she is because she might be too busy to see me, lol. She trims my ends on a regular basis, which keeps it healthy and strong.

With my current style, it takes NO time at all. All I have to do is finger comb it unless I'm putting it in a ponytail to keep it out of my way at work. Plus I use Kerastase products which are truly fabulous. I haven't had tangles since I started using them.

HisSweetElysium -> RE: Hairy Issue (11/14/2009 1:28:29 PM)

I had straightish/ wavy black hair down to my ass until about 2 weeks ago, I got 6 inches cut, and it's still to my elbows. My umm, bedroom escapades have been severely messing up my hair, and something had to be done.  Getting it cut regularly helps with the tangling. Also as others said, pic it out in the shower while it's full of conditioner, that helps a lot.  I also braid it while it's wet, 2 braids, sometimes 4.  Or put it up with a big barrette, not only does it keep it tidy for a day +, it gives it more body and shine.  I use Nexxus leave in conditioner, it helps a lot and smells wonderful.   I would not advise pulling it back regularly, as your front hairline takes most of the stress and can start to thin.

One other note, Master and I spoke of this just today.  There is something very special and intimate about watching a woman brush out and tend to her hair. Throughout history it is something a woman only did in the security and comfort of her home, with her family.  Just today Master and I were laying in bed together, and I spent 15 minutes or so picking out my hair after a lovely romp together.  Sitting there, naked, clothed only in my long  hair in the morning light, He just watched, quietly telling me how beautiful I looked.

I love my long  hair,  despite the work (and the fact my mother tells me I am too old to wear it this way).  Kudos to all the other lovely long haired lasses who take the time to embrace their femininity in this way.  :)

BINGO!!! I feel far more feminine with long hair. No matter the style I just don't feel the same with short hair!
