FR

Thick skin and a wicked sense of humour does a body (and soul) good.

the ad here had a Mom who was an "executive" by day and a stripper by night.  count yer blessin's.

Thanks for all your responses. I guess I should clarify a bit. It's not that I'm thin-skinned or easily offended. I don't find that particular commercial that offensive at all. I guess it's just kind of the final straw. Everywhere you turn these days, some group is offended and have been "violated" by some portrayal of themselves or some stray word that wounded them. It's overkill, for sure. But, as I've said a million times here, [sm=soapbox.gif], it just irritates the hell out of me that (other than fat folks), the only group it's acceptable to openly mock and make fun of by everyone is poor white trash. Hell, keep your eyes open and you'll find it's usually other poor white trash (in denial of course) doing the most poking[8|]

That commercial is not so bad in and of itself. It's just another example of that tendency to snicker at poor, dumb "hillbillies." Can't openly make fun of any other group so we gotta have once socially acceptable scapegoat, right? That's just how I see it. And the hypocrisy of it all is the saddest. Those who go rabid when the "N" word is used don't bat an eyelash at "white trash." Rather disgusting, frankly.

And as far as Quizno's, they suck anyway really. And like someone else said, that other weird-ass ad campaign was enough to turn anyone off. They really need to hire some ad guys who don't have their heads completely up their asses[8D]

Luci, that's not entirely true, one ah,....."group"... I love going after is Illegal Aliens!
Some people for whatever reason or motives try to "legitimize" them but they might as well go to the beach and shovel shit against the tide.
The convoluted shit that they come up with is unbelievable! Ted Kennedy was their "hero" but they forget that he said in 1986 after Reagan's "amnesty"; "There will never again be another amnesty and the borders will henceforth be secured." LOL!
What if those same people wanted to "legitimize" Rapists?
I have no animus to the illegal alien personally, I wish them the very best of luck back in their own home countries!
But, if we're going to be "a country of laws" we need to start enforcing them! Clinton and Bush certainly didn't enforce our immigration laws and we're waiting out here for the "Change" that Obama promised us!
If he even tries another "amnesty" after The People broke the Senate phone system two years ago I'm going to start calling him "President Carter" because he'll be a one-term president.
So, it's not so much that I go after Illegal Aliens but the people/groups who try to defend them.
It's fun for me because it's an argument that those pinheads can never win. Boy, they come up with such creative B.S. , cognitive dissonance, and convoluted logic that it's almost entertaining! Trying to get an honest disscussion out of those imbeciles is like trying to have an honest disscussion with Bernie Madoff, a sociopath about where all the assets are! A true sociopath he now says he's "misunderstood!" lol
But, yes, I do understand your point about "rednecks" and "Hillbillies" being safe targets for criticism and derision.
Being "Scots/Irish myself I can definately relate to "Hillbillies/Rednecks."

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Bigoted "Quizno's" commercial (11/1/2009 2:13:50 PM)

Actually another group that is acceptable to make fun of is men. Take some of the same jokes about men, replace the word woman in them, and have a man tell them, and it would cause a huge uproar.

Yes, I do agree Orion. I even noted in my OP how commercials make men look stupid. You're right that, if that were women, it wouldn't go over as well. I don't like at all. I'm really not sure why ANY group (as a whole) has to be pictured as ALL anything. It's just ignorance, pure and simple.

BTW...I also totally agree with what you said about "hillbilly" ingenuity and the fact that insulting people who consider themselves "hillbillies" to their faces wouldn't be wise[:)]. I grew up in an area where most people, including some family, could probably be labeled as such and I have lots of pride and love for 'em. They're definitely not the ignorant, lazy fools they're often lampooned as. Guess that's why it ruffles my feathers so much sometimes to see the dumb caricatures..........luci

OneMoreWaste -> RE: Bigoted "Quizno's" commercial (11/3/2009 6:42:13 AM)

As a fat, white, middle-class, heterosexual male who lives in the rural South, I find that just about any politically-correct modern humor is at my expense.

So I tell blonde jokes, then look around guiltily to make sure nobody overheard me [:-]

(or I listen to old George Carlin recordings, because he was one funny motherfucker)

There's been one running day in and day out here. It shows a couple folks in a bathtub full of water, elevated over a bonfire and says something to the effect of: "Ooooh, that hillbilly hottub looks dangerous." Are you kidding me? I know commercials often attempt to make men appear clueless and I don't appreciate that either. But "hillbillies?"

According to Merriam Webster, "hillbilly" means "a person from a backwoods area." Is their any other group that would tolerate such bigoted, prejudiced nonsense in a mainstream commercial such as this? I remember a year or two back when a commercial for granola bars had a kid saying his/her neighbors were hillbillies. That section of the commercial ended up edited out due to complaints. Great! I'm just wondering where the complaints are about this one.

Of course, it's only making fun of poor folks and "hillbillies" are almost universally thought of as being white. So, apparently it's no biggie since it's not making fun of poor blacks, Jews, Native Americans, Hispanics, etc. It irks me to no end and, believe me, I won't be spending my dollars at Quizno's if that's their level of intelligence and sensitivity.

Anyone else find that commercial wrong?

Bottom line, if you can't say nothing nice, say nothing at all.

I don't see anything wrong with your description of it or the use of hillbillies, but i also crack up at Jeff Foxworthy's You might be a redneck if --- which THIS COMMERCIAL may be some kind of spin off from as he is popular countrywide.  I don't exactly know how the commecial relates to subs but i haven't seen it either -- just going based on your description.

angel

I haven't seen the commercial either.  Reading this thread I thought about those poor cavemen in the Geico commercials.  But angel brings up a very valid point.  Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck if..." is directly aimed at finding humor in less-than-intelligent human beings.  He made alot of money on it, offended no one, and he's still going strong.

Uh, well, if you ladies would go to post #4 you would be able to see it.

And it would only take 15 seconds out of your lives.

people are slowly sucking the humor out of all things because of thin skinned people who are so concentrated on insult in everything.

And before you ask, yes i think blacks, Jews, Native Americans, Hispanics, etc. need to relax also.  I am blonde and Polish -- so you can imagine the jokes and ways to make fun of me but you know what, i laugh at funny blond jokes and Polak jokes.  I could take major offense as most blonds and Polaks are white and get all sensitive, but in the end, i don't because life is too short to be offended by everything you see or find some way to be offended by everything you see or hear.

Barelynangel,
i agree with you.  i'm obviously a black guy, and i too think Americans have grown too thin-skinned.  The culture of political correctness is sapping all of the fun out of our lives.

i can admit that i think that Jeff Foxworthy is funny.  So is George Lopez.  So is Chris Rock.  So was "All in the Family".  And "Good Times".  And "The Beverly Hillbillies".  And think about stereotypical characters like Thurston Howell III (rich people) or Ginger (glamorous women) on Gilligans Island.  How about the Germans on "Hogan's Heroes"?  I laughed at each of those examples.  i laugh at the irreverent jokes on South Park, and i don't think there is a group that they haven't picked on yet.  i think that naming the lone black kid on that show "Token" was absolutely hilarious.  i also laugh at their "Timmy" jokes, though i am not insensitive to handicapped people.

i don't go around calling people names or making racist/sexist remarks.  Yet i think it is okay to laugh at ourselves.  People can be so sensitive sometimes.  Our society has become so politically correct that it's hard to say or do ANYTHING without upsetting someone.

On the one hand you are quite right about the hypocrisy on who we are “officially” allowed to make fun of and who we are not, but redneck (hillbillies, hicks, whatever you want to call them) culture is based upon a near total lack of pretense. I grew up half hick myself and have never met a people more willing to laugh at themselves. I know people who would see that commercial and think, “now there’s an idea.”
True - one of the things I miss about living in the South amongst the working class was the fact that almost nobody fronted - they tell it like it is, they'll tell you the complete details of their last erotic encounter at full volume in the middle of the supermarket - and that's the women - usually, the story will be funny.

I don't miss so much having to fight off the odd Rottweiler who has slipped his chain.

HisBestGirl -> RE: Bigoted "Quizno's" commercial (11/4/2009 3:13:13 PM)

slaveluci, I totally hear you about ads making men appear clueless and stupid. It's funny how their formula to sell products to women is to portray an incredibly hot, much younger woman (a 30yr old who miraculously has 17 yr old kids or whatnot) married to a much older, paunchy, comically unattractive man who can't find the remote.

Whilst I tend not to pay too much attention to ads, ones like these make me roll my eyes and say something demeaning to the tv. Yes, I am one of those people who talks back to the tv. [:D]

Sorry to hijack.

Add Carlos Mencia to that list.  I went to see him live.  People of every color laughing at each other and themselves.  I think this country needs more of that, not less.

The jokes are funny because they touch on reality.

NormalOutside -> RE: Bigoted "Quizno's" commercial (11/4/2009 3:41:03 PM)

Is "bigoted" the right word? That means "strongly opinionated" or "intolerant". How is using the word "hillbilly" intolerant or opinionated?
As for the definition you gave for hillbilly, a person from a backwoods area, "backwoods" means "remote".

Putting 2 and 2 together, you're claiming that a commercial which mentions someone from a remote area is intolerant and opinionated.
Suffice it to say, I can't see your point.

In many ways I find the lack of pretense admirable - there is just a basic honesty, about being human, to it. As someone once said, "the reson Rednecks watch cars driving in circles at high speed, hoping to see some of them crash, is because they enjoy watching cars drive in circles at high speeds, hoping to see some of them crash."

The South does seem to be the bastion of Redneck culture in the United States but there are large pockets throughout the whole country (and I'm quite certain, the whole world). The are areas in New York (remember people, it's more than just a city - it's a whole State[:)]) where the only real difference between the people there and Rednecks anywhere, is the accent.

I'm sorry. Maybe if you think about it real hard, it'll become clear? Think "Deliverance." That is the usual "hillbilly" portrayal. Stupid and bigoted. Depictions such as in this commercial are just part & parcel of that type of thinking. You don't see commercials being made using the "N" word or talking about "ghetto" hottubs or whathaveyou. That's hypocrisy and that's my point..........

Fast Reply -

Terms such as: hick, hill billy, white trash, redneck, etc have as much to do with lack of economic status as ethnic background.  America does have social stratification by economic classes and social hierarchy based on wealth and education levels.
