saltcod -> Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 1:34:24 PM)

I don't drink, smoke, take drugs or gamble my money away, but I am kinky.

Should I consider it a vice?

Are you a lustful, greedy, or slothful kinkster?

Main Entry: 1vice Pronunciation: \ˈvīs\Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin vitium fault, viceDate: 14th century

1 a : moral depravity or corruption b : a moral fault or failing c : a habitual and usually trivial defect or shortcoming : foible <suffered from the vice of curiosity>
2 : blemish, defect
3 : a physical imperfection, deformity, or taint
4 a often capitalized : a character representing one of the vices in an English morality play b : buffoon, jester
5 : an abnormal behavior pattern in a domestic animal detrimental to its health or usefulness
6 : sexual immorality

Does the definition fit?  Only you can answer that.

you could use a vice in bdsm, or vicegrips if you are into heavy play, sure....

Like most other things it is what you make of it.  It can be a vice if you let (or make) it so, or it can be a rich and fulfilling experience that may last a lifetime.

RedMagic1 -> RE: Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 2:11:11 PM)

Depends.  Are you.... vicious?

I do not consider it to be a vice for me.

LadyPact -> RE: Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 2:16:31 PM)

I've never thought of it as a vice, but I suppose you could.

I don't think it's a moral question at all.  It's just a preference, or a desire for a certain adventure or escape.

If you really believe that it is wrong for consenting adults to do what they like in private, then don't do it.
I find a vice is something you wish to stop but cannot and that has adverse effects on your life, if only the shame it engenders in you.

Since I don't find this to negatively impact my life, nor do I wish I would not do it, then for me it is not a vice. In fact instead of having negative results on me, it has positive ones. I have someone who knows me truly and loves all of me. I find my life is enhanced by having him to turn to. And my sex life is certainly greatly improved.

I believe almost anything is ok in moderation. And it is up to personal interpretation and sets of values as well.

Surrenderwithin -> RE: Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 5:42:11 PM)

I think anything in life can be a vice depending on how you use it. Also many things that are vices to others can be used in a manner by me so that it is not a vice. It is all a matter of perspective.

YOU can consider it anything YOU want..
The things you mention above can be ADDICTIONS..
and yet for some they are not..
YOUR idea of BDSM is yours as well...to some it is get a spanky spank..to others it is being a toilet or suffering a great deal of pain for another..
Therefore...
you would need to discern if your defnition and your actions within YOUR framework cause grievace results or discord within your own life or other's..such as loss of job..due to inability to focus due to the life style..harm etc etc.

I drink. I smoke. I take drugs. I gamble. And holy fuck do I love everything kinky and deviant.
What could be wrong with all of that?

abuddingdom -> RE: Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 9:11:18 PM)

Remember the Doobie Brothers? One of their early albums was titled " All my habits are now vices"......

I think you what you describe, Des, fits the definition of addiction more than vice. It fits the way I've defined addiction, almost word for word, since I began understanding the concept some years back. I'm certain I've discussed it on these boards. I don't include the "shame" part but should probably add it as shame certainly is part&parcel of addiction  particularly once an addict had faced & admitted that they are one. I consider vice- or a vice -  as something considered not only immoral by society& deemed harmful to society(or more accurately the part of society which makes laws )but has also been made illegal. Hence the vice squad, which we hear less&less of since  most of those vices have become thoroughly unmanagageble by the police and  they  have their own departments - narcotics, gambling, prositution, etc. It's a wasteful&costly, & I don't just mean money, mess which is why I favor decriminilizing all of it. Yes, we'd have some serious problems for awhileand human debris, likely the better part of a generation, and I certainly don't trust the government to competently regulate it all even if it did happen outside of fiction. But,  prohibition & legislating morality has never been successful.

As to the topic, though, BDSM, even D/s & M/s are certainly considered a vice by a large segment of society. I advise the op to get comfortable in his kinky  skin, if he's not already. Once that's acheived one will find that they worry less&less about it.

Elipsis -> RE: Is bdsm a vice? (10/29/2009 11:31:04 PM)

I am just going to come straight at this one with a "no" answer.

BDSM is not immoral or even abnormal.
