It's a very interesting religion, but as you say, there's a lot of secrecy and you get the impression that a lot of what's been written is the result of researchers being fed a line of crap that amused somebody. The fact that the workings are an integral part of the religious ceremonies instead of being something completely separate always hugely impresses me. I love that.

*chuckles* Bad news for you there porcelaine. It seems to me that there's a fairly strong mystical element among the BDSM'ers. I see no reason why any particular brand of mysticism ought to be excluded. It's kind of like south park I think... nobody gets out unscathed.

i find it very unlikely that a group of bdsm types are practicing this. there's far too much involved and that's putting it lightly. i believe if anything the term has been bastardized.

Amongst my many and varied friends and associates, I've hear Obeah referred to in a similar context as Santera and other practices loosely grouped as Voodoo or Voudun from the West Indies and specifically Haiti. I'm pretty much on the outside looking in here but am treated with respect as much due to my respect for the secrecy of such practices and my own knowledge and practices of Western rites. If Neets and I decide to leave Aussie, one of the options we are seriously looking at is moving to the BVI (British Virgin Islands) if so I will definitely be looking at learning all I can about such religions and practices.

they are all african traditional religions. but the differences are vast. as you move up the scale it does get darker and there are two paths in some practices, like vodoun. the latter term generally refers to the the haitian style. voodoo has its roots in new orleans. it isn't uncommon for those that follow it there to use this and hoodoo as well. different but complimentary paths. santeria utilizes Orisha's and the santos - catholic saints. that is how the religion was hidden.

as for what can be learned, much of what you read is incorrect and information has been intentionally left out. you'd have to find a house that would be willing to teach you. perhaps overseas the attitude is different than here in the states. there's also the money component. be prepared to spend quite a lot. these religions don't come cheap. although my curiosity is piqued about your desire to learn. is it for education's sake?

you're correct and it would be very rare for them to allow outsiders in. many practitioners of atr's have issues about initiating those that are outside its ethnic lines. there are houses that won't allow it period. i am well aware of many people having a problem and they were minorities. there are some well known personalities in the states that people have sought out to circumvent this if they lacked minority status or couldn't find a reputable house that would take them.

I am well used to the secrecy surrounding these traditions and yes I agree that most of what is written is either wrong or just barely scratches the surface.

My desire is both educational so that I may understand such things better. The few Practitioners/Initiates I do know have commented that I would find much to complement what I already do albeit from a ritual area rather then a spiritual one which will as I understand them not clash with my own beliefs and practices anyway, both working with the earth and nature. Were we to live in the British Virgin Islands, it is not half a world away from Haiti (I have a deep love of the Haitian Voodoo Drum music when I can get it. It calls to me at a very primal level), and by that time I would have retired as Grand Master of a Hermetic Lodge and be free of obligations to that body other than my vows of secrecy and thus if I wish am free to explore other paths. Money of course would not be any object as far as the costs of training were I lucky to be accepted.

#2 - a bdsm related black supremacy group that does not allow black submissives or white dominants, was formed as early as the late 60's and is still active today.

Interesting. Mistress had made mention of it to me a few months ago while were cuddling on the couch and I was unable to find a definition related to BDSM so it kind of slipped out of my mind. Thanks for sharing.

the biggest hurdle is finding someone willing to train you. especially if they have issues crossing ethnic lines. it has been a hot issue over the years. perhaps that has changed, though i'm skeptical. i've seen firsthand how differently some are treated. in regard to the expense it can range from $10-25k depending on tradition. music wise you'd probably like boukman eksperyans if you enjoy haitiian drumming. their music has vodoun undertones.

Because religious expression varies from group to group and person to person, I'd check in with the person aobut how it affects day to day life.  Even within a class or group learning the same thing, the application of beliefs or rituals is varied.

*Just a thought.
