PolyVinyl -> learnin' bout the Blues (10/25/2009 5:33:29 PM)

Hey everyone, so..kind of off-topic (I'm in the right place, right? lol)

I watched the Blues Brothers a few nights ago, and I've been looking up some interesting Blues music... does anyone have any suggestions to check out?
John Lee Hooker's 'Boom Boom' is pretty kickass...so I guess I was looking for something in that style.

Thanks everyone,

Willie Mabon, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Albert King, B.B. King, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters

These are all some good blues artists to look up. There are many, many more, but this is a good start.

MUDDY WATERS!!!! ~~~OH YEAH!!~~~[:)]

slaveluci -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/25/2009 6:45:40 PM)

Robert Johnson is the king of blues so start with him. Blues guys don't have to be black, ya know. Try Paul Butterfield Blues Band and a Jewish white boy named Mike Bloomfield. He'll knock your socks off!

Lightnin' Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Blind Willie McTell, Big Bill Broonzy, Albert Collins, Big Mama Thornton, Howlin' Wolf, Blind Lemon Jefferson.....all greats.

luci and her Master (He lubs Him some blues[;)])

I second Robert Johnson(i have his box set) .. also Bobby "Blue" Bland and my favorite female singer ever Etta James (also Billie Holiday if you want to reach back). Oh, and ZZ Hill.
Loooove the Blues :)

p.x. speakin' of white guys .. Eric Clapton

DesFIP -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/25/2009 8:47:58 PM)

Son House, who gave Robert Johnson his first chance to perform.
Start with the delta blues, which is where it all started.

Male performers started in the country. Women blues players in the city. Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith are the two most famous female. Bessie Smith is amazing, powerhouse of a voice.

GYPSYMAMBO -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/25/2009 8:49:37 PM)

Wilson PICKETT....
Johhny and Candy Shines[:)]

Just looking at this thread makes me love you people so very much.  Especially the ones that mentioned Clapton.  My favorite blues album of all time is Clapton's "From The Cradle).  Holy jeebus what an awesome album.  I seriously didn't believe it was clapton until my boss finally got sick of arguing with me and took it out of the cd player and threw it at me.  LOL

That was many many moons ago now.  God, that album is like 15 or 16 years old now, isn't it? O.O  Where the hell did time go?

I'd throw some names out there, but, it's looking like the best of the best have been covered.

Well, okay, a few, but they're not "blues" per se.  More Jazz, but, in my opinion they'll help give you a little better understanding of the music.  Albert Collins, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker.

Anarrus -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/26/2009 10:12:11 AM)

Can't believe I forgot Buddy Guy.
btw Albert Collins is definately a bluesman.... aka The Iceman for that cold Fender Tele tone he's known for.

Quite so.  But he's also had more than one foray into jazz, which is why I mentioned him there.  Blues is wonderfully complex in its simplicity, and there are so many different styles and flavours.  I really hope the OP has a LOT of time on his hands to look into this. :)

Termyn8or -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/26/2009 10:22:17 AM)

FR

What I've seen in the responses is that blues is hard to define. I never thought of ZZ Top as blues, but now that I think of it....i.e. Jesus Just Left Chicago for one.

"Modern" rock and roll is a combination of blues and who knows. In fact many old timers will say the rock and roll would not exist without Black influence, and I find it hard to disagree. When the hillbilly producer told Buddy Holly "We don't make nigra records here boy", and he went on to be a hit, to actually have a hand in forming the new music of the era, let that hillbilly bite his lip. If he wasn't an asshole he could've been bigger than Coral records. You never fuck with the artist.

I would suggest to the OP that he get into a P2P, so he can sample all this music. Otherwise you pay a million dollars for a million tunes you don't like, to find ten that you do. If you really want to be honest, after you download something and decide you like it, go buy it. No problem.

Get some BB king. I am not the fan type, but from what I've heard the guy was obviously very talented, but on top of that he loved going out among the regular folk. He has played with more bands than can be counted. And for free. He might walk into a bar for a beer and people would say "Lookit who's here". He was cut of a different cloth than many, who would rther lear jet around, and take the yacht to the store for a pack of smokes. A Man of the people.

Another one like that was Hank Williams. His stuff was blues or the sky is green. He had something to sing about as well. He was truly addicted to alcohol and it ruined his life. He was supposed to be at the Grand Ole Opry and they find him in a hole in the wall beer joint, playing and singing to local folk, and not making a dime doing it.

It's that kind of thing that makes it real. That's why I have thousands worth of musical instruments, half of which I can't play or really suck at. I spent about eight years of my life not listening to any music. When I changed up, I took it with a whole different attitude. My collection of music is quite vast and diverse, but the thing is - I don't even have a radio, except for in the car.

Music is not what they tell you it is, it is what YOU tell you it is.

BKSir -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/26/2009 10:56:21 AM)

Actually, I was going to suggest Napster.  We pay $15/month (or something along those lines) for all the music we can eat.  And I can eat a LOT of music.

Moonhead -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/26/2009 11:10:04 AM)

Can I just mention John Martyn's version of I'd Rather Be The Devil is people are having Clapton and Johnny Winter?

IronBear -> RE: learnin' bout the Blues (10/26/2009 2:54:25 PM)
