Crap I just got called for jury duty, the only question I have is how come they get away with 12 bucks a day pay, how come they don't have to pay MW????

Because it is your civic duty?
Yeah paying a bit more would be very nice. I think it goes by state and county unless its a federal case?
You got the letter from your county court?
Never mind my google-fu showed that federal jury get boned too http://www.uscourts.gov/jury/jurypay.html

Because you're not an employee, and they aren't paying you to do work.

Check with your employer.  Many will pay the difference between your regular pay and jury duty bupkiss.

If you genuinely can't afford it, you should be able to get out on the basis of financial hardship.

If the letter is only to show up to see if you are chosen for jury duty then don't sweat it. 9 times out of 10 the case is settled before it ever goes to court or you won't be chosen to be a jurist.

because in most cases you turn it over to your employer and he pays you your regular wages

Let's hope it's petit, not grand. Grand serves for a month. Depending on your county maybe only two or three mornings a week.

Yeah, I just received one too. It pays even less than it costs to park downtown Chicago, not to mention that it's a 1.5 hour trip in rush hour.

So I called, to see if they can transfer my service to a local court, only 12-13 minutes away from me (with a huge, free parking lot to boot).

I was told "We don't do that."

Of course not. It would make perfect economic sense to lessen travel time and fuel expenditures of the common man.

Typical governmental mindset... waste.

We get free parking up here, not at the convenient lot but within walking distance.
