I believe he has the right to have this opinion.

We need fewer people with 'opinions' and more people with brains.

Brains are nice but the ability to have opinions and state them is very important. If this man could not freely have an opinion none of us could. Just disagree with him and society will remove him from his position, job and power. We will move on with him or without him. His choice really.

It'll be interesting to see if a suit will be filed, and what happens then. There is no doubt that a JP has no compulsion to marry just anyone that shows up, I work for one, and unless Louisiana is different, then...

However, as has been pointed out, if there is a way to tie his refusal to some law against discrimination, then maybe they have a leg to stand on.

I can't even begin to imagine how awful that couple would have felt

No shit.  How entirely fucked up is that?

My uncle married a black woman in the early 1960s.  The marriage is still going strong, and they have a mixed race child, who works as an HR director.

AFAIK, a JP is not permitted to deny a marriage license of both parties are of age and willing to marry.  The situation is no different than a government official denying food stanps or a library card or any other government service based on race.

I disagree that he should resign.  I'd fire him.

JPs don't have to do weddings; it's a power they have to do them, and some of them don't do any.

Having said that, I would be ashamed if mine behaved like this character.

Level....if there was a CM award....you'd win the "Super Cool" Emmy.

This issue is so fucked up.

Why is this even in the headlines?

Man's halt of interracial marriage sparks outrage

NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana's governor and a U.S. senator joined Friday in calling for the ouster of a local official who refused to marry an interracial couple, saying his actions clearly broke the law.

Interesting; let's see what statutes you use.

If they can endure the looks from their families and strangers, if they can endure the comments, the ostracizing and all that comes with that, by all means let them get married. I'm sure the brother involved knows enough history to know what to expect. If not, oh well.

WTF?  This is the 21st century.  I've seen interracial couples before and don't think anything of it.

That's just you, but as you can see the judge isn't like you. What does the "21st century" have to do with anything? Apples don't fall that far from the tree.

Just to put the fat in fire[sm=evil.gif]
I have heard of more than one rabbi refusing to marry people of mixed faiths.[:D]

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Louisiana JP refuses to marry interracial couple (11/7/2009 8:32:38 AM)

This is a lot more common than you think. I lived in Oklahoma for about two years and people still give dirty looks or made rude comments when they see interracial couples together down there. I made a comment to a friend who has lived there her whole life and her response to the conversation we were having is .." I'm surprised her daddy didn't grab a shotgun and go after him that's just the way it is here." After spending some time in Louisiana it's really not all that surprising that a judge refused. It happens to be more common in smaller towns.
