"Take the Money and Run" has lyrics that aren't intelligent enough for a five year old.  And MacArthur Park has random words pieced together for a lyric.

So it's settled?  Belgians are good for waffles, pommes frittes, beer, and draft horses, and should be discouraged from attempting anything else?

You left out "Belgian women." I would encourage them to not give up on making Belgian women. Crank out as many as possible, in fact. I consider that an unparalleled success.

They just need to strap the prisoner down and play THIS song. They'll be spilling the beans before it reaches the end.

Actually, the Kingston Trio do a cool version of it...(I'm guessing they did it first...)

It was a Jaques Brel song and I think Rod McKuen did it early on.

Not for Holly

Before The Tokens converted it into The Lion Sleeps tonight, The Weavers did it.
Pete Seeger came up the phonetic version: "Wimoweh" but this is the original... from 1939.

Another nice version here: Mbube

Edit (3 times) due to brain is on hiatus.

Uhm... I don't know. It's still pretty syrupy and overly sentimental. I didn't know there were earlier versions of it - I only knew of the Terry Jacks version which plauged my childhhood during the seventies.

Edited to add: I also didn't know about the rich history behind "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." So thanks, agelikaJ. Sometimes you learn the most interesting things on these boards.

Thanks.
As for Seasons In The Sun, Jacques Brel's version is different; not so sacharine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbhvoYYIdnQ&feature=related
Rod McKuen penned the english version and Terry Jacks modified it.

Edit: spelling

Interesting. The lyrics are indeed less sacharine and somehow the tune seems to work in French (but then the French always were good at being mauldin). Still, that tune flashes me back to the seventies and having to listen to my sister play it one her record player over and over and over.

I guess Terry Jacks just ruined it for me.

“Convoy” is more of a joke song (C.W. McCall got his start pitching mayonnaise or ‘Miracle whip’ or something like that). The thing I never understood about that song is that it’s supposed to be a real manly song (we all a bunch of big tough truck drivers) but the chorus sounds like castratos.

Wow. That was great. I love the deep resonance that the Black African voice can achieve - and no one else can.

And another wow. The things you learn. I've always like Manheim Steamroller's Christmas music - especially their version of "The Little Drummer Boy (my favorite Christmas song).

I'd like to apologize to all Belgians for insulting their radio for having some of the worst playlists when it comes to music. I'd also like to apologize to the DJ from the Hotel Ibis in Katowice, Poland where I spent one miserable Saturday night at the hotel's disco in 1995.

Not longer than a couple of hours ago a private party ended at my local pub where the DJ subjected me and my neighbours to a playlist which included:

4 Non Blondes 'What's going on?'
I will always remember 4 Non Blondes for introducing yodelling, nervous breakdowns and primal scream therapy to Nineties rock music all in one song.

C.W. McCall 'Convoy'
This one threw me completely, making me wonder who or what could have been responsible for causing this party. What could me and my neighbours have done to deserve this? We're nice people when you get to know us. Really.

Air Supply 'Here I am'
It may be ironic, but this is the one band which always makes me consider strangling myself. I'm well aware that songwriters get ideas for songs in almost any conceivable situation, but surely not in the bathroom when you're dealing with a bout of severe constipation.

Right Said Fred 'I'm too sexy'
Such a shame that this DJ didn't consider themselves too sexy for this private party. The low point is when the lead 'singer' Richard Fairbrass attempts to 'sing' in the chorus.

R.E.M. 'Shiny happy people'
It's one thing when you have a song which upsets you, but this is a song where you get the impression that whoever is singing it is out to upset you and they're trying to make it personal.

Cher 'Believe'
This is a song which Cher appears to sing with the aid of text to speech software probably of the same type as Microsoft Narrator which you find in the Accessibility menu of Windows XP.

Mariah Carey 'Emotions'
I thought the world was a much better place until I was reminded that Mariah Carey, who admittedly I'm not a fan of, sang this. She may have a great vocal range, but this song gives me a migraine.

Cheeky Girls 'Cheeky Song'
The only conclusion I can draw is this song may sound better when you've drunk enough alcohol to lose complete control of your senses and body movements. If you hear it when you're sober, you may desperately want to drink that amount of alcohol just to obliterate any experience or memory of this song.

There were others such as some rap artist singing 'I'll be missing you', I'm almost sure I heard Britney Spears' voice, and others which I don't even want to think about.

This thread is therapy.

So what about you? What song or songs make you suffer?

Me and Misus Jones - hate that song

With apologises to Marc2b - the little drummer boy makes me want to pull out my tongue and stuff it in my ears , as does "i saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus" and "jingle bells rock".

In fact when i think upon it, there are more Christmas songs that make me want to eviscerate myself than any other genre. Must because we have to listen to them for three months solid. [8|

edited to add - i also don't think much of Belgium chocolate.

Eh... no biggie... to each his own.

I don't care for most Christmas music either but I've always like the beat to "Little Drummer Boy." I also like it's message - that everyone has something they can give to make others happy. The best version is by Ring Starr. He makes it rock. Unfortunately I couldn't find a decent version of it on YouTube.
