stella41b -> My public apology to Belgians (10/9/2009 11:59:55 PM)

I'd like to apologize to all Belgians for insulting their radio for having some of the worst playlists when it comes to music. I'd also like to apologize to the DJ from the Hotel Ibis in Katowice, Poland where I spent one miserable Saturday night at the hotel's disco in 1995.

Not longer than a couple of hours ago a private party ended at my local pub where the DJ subjected me and my neighbours to a playlist which included:

4 Non Blondes 'What's going on?'
I will always remember 4 Non Blondes for introducing yodelling, nervous breakdowns and primal scream therapy to Nineties rock music all in one song.

C.W. McCall 'Convoy'
This one threw me completely, making me wonder who or what could have been responsible for causing this party. What could me and my neighbours have done to deserve this? We're nice people when you get to know us. Really.

Air Supply 'Here I am'
It may be ironic, but this is the one band which always makes me consider strangling myself. I'm well aware that songwriters get ideas for songs in almost any conceivable situation, but surely not in the bathroom when you're dealing with a bout of severe constipation.

Right Said Fred 'I'm too sexy'
Such a shame that this DJ didn't consider themselves too sexy for this private party. The low point is when the lead 'singer' Richard Fairbrass attempts to 'sing' in the chorus.

R.E.M. 'Shiny happy people'
It's one thing when you have a song which upsets you, but this is a song where you get the impression that whoever is singing it is out to upset you and they're trying to make it personal.

Cher 'Believe'
This is a song which Cher appears to sing with the aid of text to speech software probably of the same type as Microsoft Narrator which you find in the Accessibility menu of Windows XP.

Mariah Carey 'Emotions'
I thought the world was a much better place until I was reminded that Mariah Carey, who admittedly I'm not a fan of, sang this. She may have a great vocal range, but this song gives me a migraine.

Cheeky Girls 'Cheeky Song'
The only conclusion I can draw is this song may sound better when you've drunk enough alcohol to lose complete control of your senses and body movements. If you hear it when you're sober, you may desperately want to drink that amount of alcohol just to obliterate any experience or memory of this song.

There were others such as some rap artist singing 'I'll be missing you', I'm almost sure I heard Britney Spears' voice, and others which I don't even want to think about.

This thread is therapy.

So what about you? What song or songs make you suffer?

Good for you, to apologize so promptly! Most people would have waffled on it....

Fugees - killing me softly

this is for me one of the most awful songs and my damn driving instructor liked that one big time when I had my lessons at that time [8|]

Oh yep, indeed they do...gosh did I enjoy them 21 years ago (gosh I am getting old [>:])

They also have damn good chocolate [:)]

DarkSteven -> RE: My public apology to Belgians (10/10/2009 6:05:31 AM)

"Take the Money and Run" has lyrics that aren't intelligent enough for a five year old.  And MacArthur Park has random words pieced together for a lyric.

So it's settled?  Belgians are good for waffles, pommes frittes, beer, and draft horses, and should be discouraged from attempting anything else?

Don't forget chocolate....and pissing statues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis

Whada ya cwazy?

“What’s going on” is a great song. “Convoy” is more of a joke song (C.W. McCall got his start pitching mayonnaise or ‘Miracle whip’ or something like that). The thing I never understood about that song is that it’s supposed to be a real manly song (we all a bunch of big tough truck drivers) but the chorus sounds like castratos. I can do without the Air Supply and the Right Said Fred (unless I’m in a bar somewhere, drunk out of my gourd and wearing a muscle shirt – which is unlikely). “Shiny Happy People” is a good song for the afternoon (if you know what I mean). Cher is Cher. She can suffer no criticism (I'm about as Dom as Dom can get but if Cher commanded me to be her naked, house cleaning, monkey boy I would do it for no other reason than... well... she's Cher. Mariah Carey has always been over-rated and I never even heard of the Cheeky Girls.

As for songs I can do with out: anything Rap or Hip-Hop (grates on my ears). I also can’t abide Polka Music (nothing against the Polish people who I know you have an affinity for), perhaps if I had a good beer buzz going I could get into it.

I do know the one song that makes everybody suffer. The CIA doesn’t need waterboarding or any other “enhanced interrogation techniques.” They just need to strap the prisoner down and play THIS song. They'll be spilling the beans before it reaches the end.

"STOP! STOP! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE STOP!"

susie -> RE: My public apology to Belgians (10/10/2009 11:57:38 AM)

I think the song was called "19" and was out in the early 80s. I was working in Cairo at the time and we used to visit a night club at one of the hotels in the evenings. The DJ was English and he used to play some great music but one night I mentioned that I found that song the most irritating song ever. As you can probably guess it appeared on his play list every night and he would make sure that he had it ready to play as soon as we arrived at the club.

DesFIP -> RE: My public apology to Belgians (10/10/2009 12:16:25 PM)

If you want yodelling, listen to Hank Williams Sr. A greatest hits cd of his was single handedly responsible for my kids behaving in the car. If you got out of control, we had yodeling songs. Even today the mere threat of it still works.

Vendaval -> RE: My public apology to Belgians (10/10/2009 1:26:45 PM)

There are a couple of songs that have "asshole" in the title that are basically rants on the airwaves.  No fun.

Remember that many radio stations are corporate and have regular rotations without a human being at the helm 24/7.

Moonhead -> RE: My public apology to Belgians (10/10/2009 1:48:43 PM)

Wasn't Plastic Bertrand from Belgium?
There's worse things than bad pub DJs. Local radio stations that just play the same half dozen songs over and over all day spring to mind. All six songs will be shit, unless a couple of them aren't quite that good.

Actually, the Kingston Trio do a cool version of it...(I'm guessing they did it first...)
