My little ferret woke up this morning sick.  He is sneezing like crazy and sits panting with his mouth open.  His nose is pale and he feels warm and just seems zonkered to me.  I am waiting for the call from the vet to know if I need to rush him in or when they can see him today.  I'm worried and I just don't want to lose the lil guy.  I could use some hugs and some expert ferret advice.  Thanks all you lovely people!

awww...Honey, hugs to you and the lil fuzzbutt. Did you try putting him in the bathroom with the hot shower running? Perhaps the steam might help?

I haven't, but it's a good idea.  I don't think it can hurt.  Thanks!

Sounds like the scene I experienced when my kitty had a toothache one morning.

Of course I am not a vet, I just submit to one during pony play.

Don't want to gross people out but..... How has his bowel movements been? Any mucus around the eyes or nose? Has he been eating and drinking?

No BM, or extremely soft to mucus covered BM is a big warning sign. Mucus around the eyes or nose is another one, but that one is usually a no brainer. Stopping eating, and especially drinking are other warning signs, but the biggest of those two is drinking.

My ferret that I used to have got sick a couple of times, one pretty severe where I stayed with Bandit overnight at the Vet (they tried telling me I couldn't stay pshhhtt), but Bandit and my friends that had ferrets all experienced good health most of the time. They may be little but usually pretty tough guys.

Thanks everyone!  My little guy and I just got back from the vet.  He has a respiratory infection (no surprise) and is dehydrated.  The vet has him on an antibiotic and gave him fluid injection.  She said just to spoil him a little extra, give him his medicine, and make sure he's eating and drinking.  I feel like such an idiot that I hadn't notice he hadn't been doing much eating or drinking the past day or so.  He is much more perky already!

Thanks for this I quoted above, Orion.  It will also help me keep an eye on him while he's on the mends.

I don't know squat about ferrets, but I sure do know how you feel.

I'm glad everything worked out okay for you and your pal.

Ferrits can be some of the best pets, if they have a good disposition and trained properly. Glad things are okay with the "little rat" (affectionate name I sometimes called Bandit). He will be feeling better and getting into trouble in no time.

Thanks so much everyone! He has been getting extra spoiling today, though I still can't quite figure out how to give him his medicine. He's a bit on the uncooperative side about it. I give it with a syringe, in case anyone has a suggestion. Once he's in a licking mood, I'll probably just put it on the back of my hand, but so far he's still a little too droopy for that. He's been doing some eating and drinking both on his own and by hand in my lap. Gots to love em!

perhaps like you would medicate a cat? Attempt to put it in the back of his mouth then either rub his throat or blow in his face to make him swallow..

Wrap him in a warm bath towel so that he cannot fuss with his arms and cannot wiggle so much (only his head should be sticking out) and then shove the syringe in his mouth and apply pressure.  Blowing in his face will make sure he swallows and can hack up the medicene.  This works on cats also.

Thanks Aylee! In his usual sweet natured fashion, he has now decided he likes his medicine, so he just opens up and says ahhh! LOL

We've got him on water spiked with a little Gatorade and giving him a little chicken baby food. He's still a little dry and very thin. He's more spunky and curious today though.
