Perhaps the OP means "should I have full authority". To which I can only reply - there are very few "shoulds" about the whole thing. Don't worry if you are not meeting any body elses expectations - what floats your boat is unique to you - same goes for who you're with. Just relax, have fun and communicate. Seriously I often think we'd be better off without the internoodle encouraging all this checking in with the collective.
