That other dating site, OKCupid, has a very informative blog in which their resident data nerds lovingly pore over the vast reams of data generated on their site and sorts it into useful and entertaining charts and graphs. This entry makes several excellent insights into the response rate to a first message. They point out:

"Netspeak, bad grammar, and bad spelling are huge turn-offs. Our negative correlation list is a fool’s lexicon: ur, u, wat, wont, and so on. These all make a terrible first impression. In fact, if you count hit (and we do!) the worst 6 words you can use in a first message are all stupid slang."

There's a lot more there. It's really a good read. What do you think?

Some of it was rather interesting, but a lot of it was just confirmation on what a lot of us have been saying around here for years.

Personally, I hate netspeak, bad grammar and bad spelling, so it would turn me off right away. But each to their own. There are others it would not bother in the slightest.

Thank you for the link to the other thread, but the link isn't working for me. I guess that's why I didn't see the previous thread. ;)

Edit: The link just started working. Very short site outage, perhaps? Weird. Anyway, mods feel free to close this thread.

Sms, web boards, I continue to write as though I write with pen and paper, so that would include correct spelling and grammar, but for some reason, this website wont let me use some grammar any more, as every time I go to use an apostrophe, the typing switches to a box at the bottom of the reply screen, to something called Quick Find (links only), which then highlights in red and goes ping and says phrase not found. This is irritating as hell, so now, no apostrophes where they should be.

I realize that the staff of OK Cupid and other sites, have access to the messages sent through their system. But does anyone else find it creepy that they're shamelessly pouring over their content?
