Today is the Day of German Unity (Tag der Deutschen EInheit), so I just wanted to say congratulations to Germany.

I am not sure if all citizens are happy with the unity..but a day off is always welcome ;)

I guess my home town will be flooded by visitors from Germany today then. I better rush to get to the shops...lol

Justme, I know that not all are happy with the unity, it was dealt with badly, but it was a big hurdle and to be honest, I have to respect the Germans for coming back from nothing (Stunde Null) and rebuilding Germany (West Germany had alot of help from the Allies, but East Germany had alot taken from it by the USSR, but in the defence of the USSR, they had been in a war on their territory also, so had to rebuild alot).

What was you doing on October 3rd 1990? And also on November 9th 1989 (day the wall came down, and yes I know it is also that November 9th is the day called Kristallnacht, Crystal Night, a day where the Nazi destroyed homes and property of Jews, arrested, killed and maimed Jewish people)?

edited to add questions.

I don't say I don't respect it....I just say I know enough Germans from East and West who complain about it.
They see it as a holiday...nothing else. I think reuniting was more a goverment thing, then a peoples thing. It sounded great..many  East people had hopes...and they didn't got much till now.

(sorry wrong profile poppep up again.. I am Justme).

Just me, could you please explain your conclusions and your source of information please?

TurboJugend -> RE: Day of Unity (10/3/2009 12:40:22 AM)

Sources?
Uh...not on paper..just my German friends...near the Ruhrgebied, Hamburg and close to Berlin.
On birthdays parties with all the family of them...the topic was discussed often.

Besides that for my work I have lots of German costumers..in our lunch-breaks we discuss these things too.
Then there is German television.

Perhaps I meet the wrong people...lol

The comment mostly made was that lots of West money goes to the East..while there are enough problems in the West that could need that money.

Thank you  for your response Justme, I have heard the same things also, from both sides.

TurboJugend -> RE: Day of Unity (10/3/2009 12:55:56 AM)

One of the remarks I heard from the East.....I hear also when I am in Romania

"Freedom is nothing with out work and food."
