These researchers did not see the black eye I gave the tech when I was being tested for carpal tunnel syndrome. He apologized to me for causing so much pain.

I agree!  Us menfolk are pansies.  You lovely ladies have to go through things like pms and pregnancy.  Men think we're dying when we have a friggin cold.  Just imagine one of us getting pregnant!  We'd explode in a ball of screaming flames!

Greedy, I'm here to tell you that I would have thrown the averages off, being such a baby about pain....  Don't get me wrong, I am far from whiny when uncomfortable; it usually becomes a matter of "oh God, this must be punishment for that time I was dishonest in my interaction with some random stranger."   "Please don't kill me in this much pain" thoughts go through my head.

Having said that, oh my goodness, the baby behavior, and award winning whining I have seen in grown burly tattooed men, has absolutely amazed me...   I almost want to call all their friends to witness the blithering manliness that is their friend.     M

HEck, when my former sub's shoulder slipped out of place, I would pop it back in. He did not stand it being out at all.

Umm, BKSir, if i'm not mistaken, i believe one of you did.  Or has everyone forgotten about the pregnant man already?

Yes, he was transgendered, but didn't he prefer to identify as male, though?  And he went through hormone treatment, too.

Y'know... just saying.

I'd have liked to see them try something other than heat though. Reminds me of Julia Child, who had a line about if you're going to cook you have to get used to handling hot things. Which is true. Exposure to hot things teaches you how long you can hold a hot handle before you get hurt, so you ignore the pain and stir the sauce or dish out the stew. And since women do most of the cooking, the odds are that the women in the study have learned to ignore heat.

If they redid it using male chefs, the results would be skewed.

I had that test myself.

The dr that did it was very good at verbalizing what was going to happen.
It helped somewhat.
Did you get the surgery??

Thanks for posting this, GT. My first thought is that women have to be able to adapt better to pain because of pregnancy and childbirth. And I can tell you from previous experience with phlebotomy that men faint more often than women. That may be because they tend to be more phobic about needles.

No surgery because I did not agree with the odds of recovery full usage (50/50). I had a chiropather teach me the massage necessary for loosening up the tendon (or ligament) and I limit my time on the computer. It does affect my crocheting though.

All I can say is...."Well, DUH!!!".  I wonder how much they spent to find ot those results!  All they had to do was ask any woman who has had to deal with any man with a hangnail or cold!

Shahar, I agree with you....I didn't like the odds, so I've passed on the surgery for years.  I've known to many dispatchers who've had the surgery and never worked again because the surgery was so botched up.  I have both tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome in both arms/hands.  I wear the braces at night on my hands when it gets bad enough, do the stretching exercises every so often, etc.  If you have problems typing, try tilting your keyboard UP, not down...I used to put a phone book under the back side of it...it made a huge difference. And get a mouse pad that has the little bump support.....but yeah, it does mess up my cross stitching too.......but not as bad as crocheting probably does.

I have always been fascinated on how men and women handle pain differently.

In general (not a hard rule), I think men can take a much harder initial hit of pain but we quickly buckle when the pain lingers.   I also think that women are much the opposite, they seem able to patiently resist pain a lot better than men.   The research you linked seems to support what I have observed.

Do note, I am a masochist and pain thrills me when it's at a certain level.   Beyond that, I can withstand a hard shock but prolonged is quickly too much.  I am sure my observations are tainted by how I respond to pain.   All this said, I have great respect for the women who I have seen endure pain (not the fun kind) and their ability to take it.
