I brought this up not too long ago.

My teenager is 15...she's not getting the shot. Not because I said no ( even though I am against it also ) but because she said no.

*shrug*

That is good.   I tend to think this vax is not needed for most.   I heard they want the boys to get it also...

The only way any group cleans up is when people actively assess what is what.   In time - if people do this - then the industry will clean its self up.   But for now- there is not too much incentive- particularly when the manufacturers are let off of any liability in many cases.

Why are you letting a 15 year old make life and death decisions about anything? Have you ever seen someone die from cervical cancer?

Dom Ken, it's not only  matter of dying from cervical cancer potentially with certain forms of HPV (Though it does happen, most typically in groups where annual exams are less standard and abnormal cells transition to cancerous and then the cancer spreads), there are also the potential negative self-esteem effects, the worry over abnoral paps, the potential for needing surgeries to make sure there isn't cancer, if there is cancer, the possibility for loss of ability to bear children, even more invasive surgical procedures, etc.  Oh, and the challenges that go along with having cancer.  Societal stigmas to HPV as well as cancer.  There are a lot more factors to consider besides death, imo.
Folks in the UK: It stinks that you can't get it for your mid- to late- teen UM's/hey can't get it.  Here, it's approved for those upto 27 and there are trials going on for use in people over that age as well as in males.  And, there are many places that will administer it for 'off label' use to those older than 27 or males with self-pay.

Don't even try to guilt me My teenager has looked at all the angles on this for the last two years; she made an informed choice.

She has her reasons for refusing; reasons that I know were made after a lot of thought. I trust and respect her judgment. It's her body; she has the right to say no to it if she firmly does not agree with it.

And don't try the 'she's still a child' tactic. That girl has not been 'a child' in a long time.

FR: I don't remember where I heard it..but k it was a couple of years ago, there's always a risk that the immunizations can have the reverse affect and that they can be deadly. Hell it's rare but it still happens. I don't believe it's going to effect whether people are getting immunization or not.
Aslo, even though you get the immunization it doesn't mean you WON'T get cervical cancer..I agree with Irish Mist..if she's refusing on her own grounds, other than e.g. being afraid of needles, I don't see why she shouldn't be allowed to refuse.

Just out of curiosity but isn't this for women teens to 26? Even if the parent decides not to do it for the teenager, once she becomes of age, she is capable of making her decision to get it, yes?

Very true.

But, it's also been suggested that this be made mandatory

I'm not trying to guily you. I just cannot understand why anyone would let a 15 year ol make life and decisions about anything. And don't give me that 'she's way more mature than her age' stuff. The fact is the parts of the brain involved in rational decision making don't get completely formed until the early to mid 20's. Until then most people simply cannot comprehend the concept of their own mortality.

By not getting the vaccine your daughter endangers herself and decreases the overall herd immunity which would serve to protect those people who don't get vaccinated for valid medical reasons such as allergies to vaccine compenents etc.

I hope your daughter never gets a pap smear with a pre cancerous cell but if she does then it will simply be too late to realize that skipping the vaccine was a mistake.

I will not get into a discussion with you about this. However, if you feel so strongly about it, I will show this to her, and she can formulate her own response to you. Then, the two of you can square off on it if you so desire.

I am going to turn this one around a bit.
I am similar to IM in the fact that I give my 15 year old (in two months) daughter the choice over what does and does not get injected into her body.  I discuss with her and we went to the doctor and read all the leaflets together.  Not just this subject but others also.
The difference?  If I had my way, she wouldn't be getting the jab.  But she chooses to have it and it is her body.  Are you going to say that I am supposed to ignore her preference because of my own ethical and personal choice?

i can recall when i was 15. I was considered hell on wheels because i had a mother who was the total opposite of IrishMist. I was capable of making decisions based on my own opinion and beliefs. If the HVP vaccine was available at that time, i would have done the research and made my own decision. More likely then not, my mother would have been there to tell me she did not care what my decision was and i was going to follow her orders.
Then the fighting would begin.
IrishMist...you are assisting your daughter in making an informed decision, trusting that informed decision and showing her the respect she has earned. I salute you.

Now Ken...suppose this was my mother and i. I was opposed, she was in favor of. By some miracle she managed to get me into the doctors office. Do you honestly think any doctor who values his license is going to administer this vaccine to an unwilling 15 yr old?
He might...but he would also find his ass facing assault charges.

I think some 15 year olds can handle this one.

From past posts of Irishmist- I am thinking she is right on target.

I agree, most 15yr olds can handle a decision like this. My opinion on vaccines certainly hasn't changed in the last 7+ years. My mother and adopted mother didn't believe in them, so as soon as I was able to prove Gillick competance (I understood the risks, benefits, side effects etc) I ignored her wishes and got all the ones from 13yrs up done myself. Legally if the 15yr old understands the decision there is nothing the parent can do about it.

Unknown medical condition, how convenient, you do not allow your child to be given medicine without being given all the possible risk factors, especially if it being given by the government

"unknown medical condition" means the parents did not know either.

She had a malignant tumour around her heart in her chest and extending into her lungs.  It's not part of the 'risk' factor.
