Wow.  I wonder if that is why I see SUV police cars now.  Any idea?

Around here I'm seeing more Chargers being used as general purpose police sedans and Mustangs being used as interceptors. Of course, the SUVs and 4-wheel pickups are part of the inventory as well for the miles and miles of unpaved, pothole ladened roads around here.

They deputies that I speak with seem to like the Chargers and Mustangs and they're not missing the Crown Vics.

They are better off with THIS anyway. Crown Vic had problems with fuel tank ruptures from rear end collisions .

I remember when they had plymouth grand furys............I really didn't think crown vics were all that much better....

Them fuckin boats had some horse-SHIT suspension.....so we would get them chasing us down gravel roads with a T in them, and they couldn't corner, because they would get airlift and they would always end up out in the cornfields.

theyre switching to the Taurus??  WTF?  Thats a crap piece of machinery.....

After having spoken to a few LEOs, the Charger sucks if the officer is over 5'5".. the lights etc. block most of the window.

PaHunk, Ford has the new Taurus comming out this year. They're good size cars and nice looking too.
The base engine is a V-6 with 265 horse power and the SHO model has 365 H.P.!

Around here, the department has crown vics, suvs, motorcycles, and mountain bikes. Lots of preserve and state park where people get in over their heads and need rescuing.

GT, the engines are fairly new and the trannys are certainly newer than in the 90's. Check it out on the Ford site, nice looking cars!

Jesus! They're making those poor bastards drive Chargers? God help them! As if being a cop isn't tough enough as it is. I'm renting a Charger right now, and it's probably the worst piece of shit I've ever driven in my life. I hate the thing. I'm 6'4", and the top edge of the windshield is several inches below my eye level - if i look straight ahead, I'm looking at the bottom couple of inches of the roof of the car. When i'm sitting at a stop light, I can't tell when the light is changing unless i lean forward far enough to rest my chin on the steering wheel, and I don't even want to begin to bark about how many other visibility problems that entails. And that's just one of many issues I have with it. Total piece of shit. I'll never drive one again.

I used to have one, and the problem was almost always with the 3.8 liter engines. The transmission was designed for the 3.0, and worked fine with that motor, but couldn't handle the extra torque of the 3.8. If they've fixed that idiotic glitch, it might not be a bad car, but as an interceptor  it still seems like a big step down from the Crowne Victoria.

*agrees with Panda on the window stuff AND the engine vs trans thing*

LOOKING good dont mean shit.   If I was  cop, I'd happily sacrifice looking good for reliable service.

Our new constable just bought a Challenger, he seems happy with it. The Sherrifs office has Chargers, DPS CVs and Tahoes, Game Wardens Ford trucks.

A deputy was parked in front of the house for a bit this morning and he was driving a Chevy Impala. He formerly was driving a Crown Vic so I asked him what he thought of his new ride and the other vehicles in their fleet.

He told me that although the smaller cabins of the newer vehicles can be annoying, he felt safer knowing that he no longer had the fear of driving something that could blow up after being hit from behind. Plus, he liked the handling of the smaller sedans over that of the Crown Vic.

They did try to give him a Charger but he opted for the Impala instead. I guess it's a bit roomier on the inside.

TPD and HIllsborough SD use them.   FHP does too, although they're bringing in the Chargers now.  I've also seen Mustangs, I think.

Here in New York they began phasing out the Crown Vic in favor of the Impala a few years ago. While I still see the occasional Crown Victoria, there's a lot more Impalas out there now.

The highway patrol tends to use the Mustang as their interceptor. I haven't seen a Charger out there yet.

I agree with GT on this.  Taurus?  I wish they would destroy and burn any and all of them that are (surprisingly) still on the road and get rid of any evidence that they ever existed.  It's ONE of the absolutely least reliable vehicles I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.  Stupid family and their love of fords.  It would be forgivable if they all liked the Crown Vic., but nooo, have to have those ugly, piece of crap tauruses.  I can seriously say that if someone were to flat out give me one, with the condition that I had to keep it, I would absolutely, without hesitation, turn it down.  The taurus that is.

The chargers, handle well, powerful, but yes, they do lack room.

Around here, there are a couple chargers, not many, and most have already switched to the Impalas.  They seem to be pretty darn good overall.  Of course, they've put in souped up engines, not the stock, showroom floor ones, but, whatever.

Usually when I see a Crown Vic, they are cabs in Austin. These cabs were formerly police cars.

I know because...I used to live with the safety manager of one cab company and organized his office on off days.
