So..I'm of the IM and txt generation. I wouldn't know how to survive without my mobile phone, txt's and msn/yahoo.
When I was younger I used to spell everything correctly and if I made mistakes I corrected them.
However after using those IMs and txt messages for a few yearsI ended up ignoring the errors n simply press enter.
Now I've started to misspell the damn things automatically! It's like implanted in my fingers that this is the correct spelling of the word. It drives me crazy! I've started correcting myself now and it's such a pain in the ass... I don't do it when I'm handwriting something but on a computer....hello spelling errorsssssssssssssssss

Does this happen to anybody else?

No. I hate those things. I'll occasionally use MSN chat, but other than that, I won't touch the damned things.

I don't use instant message like yahoo nearly as much now as I have in the past. When Jem was traveling all over the globe for work, caring for her ill brother and then living in Paris after he died, we used to use Yahoo IM all the time. Now, I use it occasionally with my youngest sister and, she is also the one that led me to begin text messaging on my cell phone.

However, I cannot even begin to bring myself to use word shortcuts and feel that, if I cannot spell it with some semblance of how it should be spelt, then perhaps I should give it up altogether.

I am weird like that.

My biggest problem has always been my humour. It doesn't translate well into the written word and it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy easier to piss people off , or hurt feelings, by accident. I don't even say hello to my other sister if I see her online (unless she messages me of course, even then I end it quickly). She gets bent out of shape far too easily and it's just not worth the hassle.

Don't IM much anymore, but even when I did I always spelled things out in full....I think its just laziness on the part of the writer wanting to save keystrokes.

I guess I'm just old fashioned and try to spell everything out even though I'm not the worlds best speller. The only time I start using shortcuts is if I am sending someone an SMS message and need to get a whole message through using just 142 characters...or however many it is. But if my message is short I still use whole words. And I HATE using text on my phone. I can understand using shortcuts for that, but I'd rather just call the person.

I don't have a cell phone, so I don't do any texting... But I do a ton of IMing, and I always type properly, use punctuation and capitalization and none of that stupid word shortening crap that people like to do.

Just as an example... for anyone that types properly, and is used to typing properly, typing 'u' instead of 'you' is likely to take either the same amount of time or longer, because you have to stop to think about it to spell it wrong... So I really don't get why people do crap like that, when they have access to a normal keyboard, since all it does is make you look/'sound' stupid and is negligibly faster than just typing out the word, if it's faster at all.

On the other hand, I can see why if someone's limited to a cellphone keypad or something, for texting or whatever, why they might want to shorten words -- So I would let it slide without yelling at someone for it, heh. But for me, even if I had to use a character map and copy and paste with the mouse to type, I'd still use proper spelling/punctuation/capitalization/etc., just because it looks utterly stupid when you don't.

I am of The Telegraph Age, The Original Instant Message. I climb the telephone pole like Oliver does on Green Acres and tap me out a message.

Only kidding, it's Sunday, lol. I do not have a cell phone, and just don't want to be stuck with another gadget to carry around.

Butterfly, does your phone have that word option where it guesses what word you want? My daughter's new phone has it and now she writes with real words again.

I had one occasion where text messages via cell phone were the best way of connecting. I was on vacation staying at my sister's place. I, as she knew, was spending most of my time studying for my courses at the public library (and a very fine library it was). She was at work. Neither of us would have considering interrupting the other's study/work. Texting worked perfectly. "Beer" "Yeah, sure, where?" , etc. I don't know about her end, but at my end a double beep to say a message has come in was way less of a distraction than a full ringing that would have to continue till I made it into the washroom to have the conversation. This was a quiet study area of the sort I wish was available at my local public library and I wasn't going to be the one to ruin it. From the work point of view, I know you can let these things go to voicemail, but gee ...

But neither my sister nor I are cellphone fanatics and in fact only had them on our persons because we were both temporarily sharing a city.

In normal times, email is a much more productive way of communicating.

BTW, my messages were fully spelled out and grammatically correct. It scared her. Her messages had to be in text speech because hers was a really old beatup phone with keypad issues.

Actually, the way I have my cell account set up, I am paying 1/2 what I was and I have unlimited text messaging. It is cheaper to text than call, for me. And often, much more convenient.

Granted, I hate talking on the phone, and I text, on average 0 - 5 texts a day. The last one I received was on Friday as was the last one I sent. I am not exactly burning up the air waves with calls or texts.

i enjoy my phone and usually text with the people i speak with most. as for im's, i've significantly reduced my time on them and recently returned to my previous mindset. save one or two people, i can sincerely do without the chatter. i find an email or a quick note is much better and unless i'm dealing with this person on a day to day basis, i don't feel inclined to talk with them frequently online.

in regard to spelling errors and generally writing as a whole. i'm anal and i find the abbreviated speak usually seeps into my writing outside of the internet which is why i try to make my form consistent. it is nearly identical when i text as well and i don't use the standard one or two letter shortened variations for words either. i type fast and it isn't much of a hassle to spell things out.

I don't do text speak..thank gawd none of my friends do either..otherwise I couldn't read what they were sayin..that generation is a few generations younger than I (I think..hope?)

I don't IM ot text. I even have a cellphone buy nobody has the number :-). Now that I think of it I am not even sure what my number is. I think I've used about twenty minutes since May when I got it.

Aside from writing emails like I talk? (Using words like "gonna","kinda" etc), no.

But, I'll tell you something - people that type out emails like they're texting REALLY burns my ass.

I usually include something like this in my reply:

".......And please. Don't type like you're texting. It's annoying. This isn't AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. <insert website here> doesn't charge 10 cents per email. Now, piss off. Your lack of even halfway decent spelling has dulled my senses. "

Yep, me too. Capitalization, punctuation and spelling are totally out the window. I realized about a month ago how bad it had gotten and have since alternated between trying to pause and think before typing and just rushing on as always.

Not too much text speak unless it is an actual text, I don't even understand half of what my kids text me.
