There is actually quite a good book on the subject called: Lovemaps: Clinical Concepts of Sexual/Erotic Health and Pathology, Paraphilia, and Gender Transposition in Childhood, Adolescence, and Maturity written by Dr. John W. Money.

I think that a lot of the drives for BDSM and Ds come from more instinctual drives. . .the establishing of the alpha and omega of a pack sorta thing.
