IN talking wiht my husband today, somehow, we got on teh subject of fairy tales and how they've been bastardized over time...

We had both thought that Sleeping Beauty was a Brothers Grimm original... it was interesting to us both to find that wasn't true.

HEre's a wiki  link to the history of the story:  Sleeping Beauty

What are some of your favorites? and whats the back story?

Sleeping Beauty is a registered trademark of Disney fairy tale control.

Jack and the Bean stalk (A story about a man that overcome the odds, a man in search of the dream of ‘The golden egg’, a tale of illicit drugs that lead to sky bound hallucinations. Sure he buried them pills in the ground, that the criminal drug dealer sold him, and a big stalk grew, sure).

We believe you Jack[8|]

My maternal grandmother had a marvelous book on children's literature.

The Three Sillies was one of my favorites, and this is close to the version I first learned:

The other story from that book that I particularly loved was Beauty and the Beast.
It was originally a French Fairy tale.

In 1946, director Jean Cocteau directed a particularly magical version:
La Belle et Bette.

It is known that many fairy tales contained much more adult elements originally, their purpose were to scare (or teach about life?) the kids.

Little Red Riding Hood is the one that I come up with in this topic.

Hans Christian Anderson was my favourite , the little matchbox girl, and the little mermaid
also Arabian Knights(aladdin), Kipling and Grimm were favourites as a kid.

The Brothers Grim actually set out to collect all the best loved fairy tales of their time and set them down in writing so they would not be forgotten.  Then Disney came along, sweetened them all up and pretended they made up all those grand tales.  (Even if they pretend that "Song of the South" never existed.)

My favorite tale was also Beauty and the Beast... the original version with father being a traveling salesman who's beautiful daughter's only wish was for a gift of one perfect rose.  The beast's castle was filled with invisible servants and no PC peeps tried to tell us that the story was bad for little girls by telling them "If you love this horrid beast of a man who abuses you long enough, he'll turn into a prince."  Funny.  I never looked at it that way.

You know, I read "Animal Farm" from the graphic novel series "Fables" and absolutely loved it!  Talk about creative license.  :D

SirLost -> RE: Fairy Tales (9/3/2009 1:46:56 PM)

The Animal Farm you are mentioning can't be written by George Orwell, can it?

(I guess it can. It is surprising for me to see this, thinking of the content and purpose of Animal Farm.)

peachgirl -> RE: Fairy Tales (9/3/2009 4:50:37 PM)

"The Red Shoes".
"The Little Match Girl" made me cry when I was little.

and who can forget that classic, "The Girl Who Trod On A Loaf".

MarsBonfire -> RE: Fairy Tales (9/5/2009 3:34:50 PM)

From the original Beauty and the Beast:

Beast: "There is no master here, except for you."

I've always seen B&B as a femmedom fable, about the magical power women have to tame and control males. But, that's just my take. When dealing with fairy tales, you can see pretty much whatever you like in them. It all depends on how you tell them.

Little Red Riding Hood is one of those that is deeply saturated in sexual themes. Check out the movie "In the Company of Wolves" to see what I mean. As I recall, one early issue of Skin II was focused on this one fairy tale, deconstructing it's S&M subtexts until the poor little story fairly screamed for mercy.

The Princess and the Frog also has some nice themes, about how you have to look past the surface to see the person that exists behind the homely exterior. (But then, I would feel that way, since I'm hardly Johnny Depp, even in a dark back alley.) LOL
