i go to a salon to get mine dyed.  The biggest problem i have is keeping it from becoming washed out and blonde on the ends.  They keep trying to convince me to shortne it but i like it longer.

It's funny reading this thread as i just had a dream last night my daughter wanted to dye my hair a new shade of red and when she was done it was a deeper red than i have now and she put blonde streaks in it, she also curled it so i had these sexy bouncy curls - it was gorgeous. Now if i could only convey to my hair stylist the color in my dreams lol.

I do have a very difficult time holding the color. It only stays the vibrant color it's supposed to be for a week maybe before it starts fading.

My wife has had a similar problem with red- I swear she's tried just about every red dye on the market, and some of them (all "permanent" dyes) were fading by the third wash.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/1/2009 3:36:34 PM)

The red dye molecules are larger than any others, so they just fall off more quickly... a sad fact of being a Scarlett O'Hair-a!  I have been using Pureology shampoo, which is a colour holding shampoo that actually WORKS on helping the colour stay.  I wash my hair every other day, and hold that great deep colour for three weeks or so before the deep fade hits.  At my age, Shades and similar products don't stick to my hair, but I think doing a glaze treatment like that every three weeks would help a LOT.  If you can afford it. [:D]

There is a "Neutral" stuff that comes in a little bottle that you can put on your hair first to help it hold the color.  Also, if you buy one of the "red" shampoos, that will help hold the color as well.

this slave thinks that it is fabulous that you ladies get to enjoy red locks as adults without having to go through the agony of being a red-head as a child.[:)]

Yaaaaay!!![;)]

do you still experience folk attributing stereotypical "red-head traits" to you (like short-tempered, fire-cracker in bed, etc.) even though it's dyed?

I've had really good results with Preference by Loreal (cause I'm so worth it!)  I use the medium auburn, and every 3rd or 4th month, I use the dark auburn.  It gives it a nice natural-looking shading.  My hair always feels so nice and conditioned afterwards, and I get a TON of compliments all the time on the color.

I stay away from the Feria's, and any color that has "Intense" in the name.  I don't like my hair to scream "colored!!!" lol

LMAO at "Suicide Redhead"....I'm going to start using that! [:D]

<----------------that avatar photo is NOT an actual photo of me, but the coloring is very close to what I have!

This is the exact color that I use as well.  Underneath it, I'm actually a brunette.  I haven't colored Mine in a while, so the red has faded a good deal.

I've been accused of being a "feisty redhead" or having the red-headed temper on occasion.  The funniest thing is how many times people assume I'm Irish, since apparently, I have the skin coloring to go with the hair so it looks more natural than my natural light gold-brown to mousey brown does.  But, I don't have an Irish bone in my body, I'm mostly German with a little Italian mixed in.  People call me "Celtic" and "Irish" all the time.

As a child I was a redhead of the strawberry blonde variety.
It actually used to be close to platinum in the summers when I was young.
It is greying some and since I did go to the beach this summer my hair is now mostly a sandy blonde.

I found that using the dark auburn every few colorings keep the medium auburn from looking faded as quickly.

This might be an option for people who want to color at home:

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/1/2009 4:52:48 PM)

I'm fair, but not Celtic fair, so no one believes my colour is real!  It's funny, beth, one of my good friends spent her childhood INSISTING that she did not have red hair... and in middle age is vigorously dyeing it "copper penny"!

Personally, I adore redheads...  though when I was a child, I wanted BLACK hair like my mom's!  One day (I was about five) I industriously coloured my eyebrows with her black brow pencil, hoping the change would be permanent.  She laughed her ass off, so at least that part was good!

windchymes -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/1/2009 4:56:26 PM)

Oh, that's funny, LadyH, I used to wish the very same thing when I was young!  I used to pray that God would make me Japanese so I could grow long, shiny, straight black hair!  [:D]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/1/2009 4:57:45 PM)

I still have that dream, Windchymes!  Mom got the family 'fro... when my dad wants to get her riled he reminds her of how our part of Italy was overrun by AFRICANS!  My younger cousins had NO problem when the afro was back in style a few years ago!

manxcat -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/1/2009 4:58:26 PM)

Red dye is one of the most difficult to achieve and keep, without being poisonous - remember when red dye #5 was banned from food?
Henna is not only not harmful - it is a plant and has been used for thousands of years - it is not difficult either.  You do have to keep it on for about half an hour minimum, to an hour and a half, depending on your starting color, but schedule it around your computer time.  For the best results, put a plastic bag over your head and then a towel to keep the heat in, and shorten your time.  It will last from 4-6 weeks depending on how often you shampoo.  I found that using Loreal's red hair shampoo and conditioner help maintain the shade, long enough to have to do the roots before the color fades, unlike dyes which commonly last about 3-6 shampoos before starting to fade.
Mix the henna into a slightly loose paste, kinda like hummus,  and let sit for about 2 hours to reduce the smell of it.  Make sure all the particles are moistened and use either a glass or stainless bowl to prevent staining.  As with all dyes, put Vaseline around your hairline, and on your ears to prevent staining as well.
Apply as you would any hair dye - to the roots and then massage it into the hair and scalp - don't forget the bottom back especially if you put your hair up.
Wrap head in a plastic bag then add a towel.  You can also use a hair dryer or blow dryer for quicker, more intense results.  It will probably take several times to get the exact color you want, but you can add things in to change the color.  Strawberries, blueberries, coffee, are some that i have used with interesting results.
Hennalucent makes several shades of red, for about 7-9$ depending on your area, for a single application, and some Sally's will carry it, but you can get the pure leaves (ground up) at  http://www.frontiercoop.com/products.php?ct=hchhaz&cn=Henna+Leaf%2C++Red
a 1# bag is 18.50 plus shipping, and will last through quite a few uses.
You can paint it on your eyebrows with a brush, and it also works on pubic hair so you can really be a *true redhead*[:D]  And yes MercnBeth, yes those traits DO materialize shortly after turning red[:o]
Thing is, like my grandmother always said *Hoffahrt mus sich tzwicken lassen*  If you are gonna be vain, you gotta bear the pain.  Literal translation.  Acutally,  Vanity must allow itself to be pinched.
One thing - you have to wash your hair 3 times to  get all the henna out, and I usually use a dark towel, just in case.[:)]

Oh and they ALWAY stop producing the products that work best, because you need them less frequently. Well that is my theory anyway.

Good Luck.

manxy

Oh, my poor son endured teasing and was called "Fro-boy", even though his hair was beautiful....tight waves that were right in style in the mid-80's....he had the poofy-front, curly-back mullet, lol.  He insisted on keeping it buzzed from about age 10 till he graduated.

loves red hair wish mine was that color. Pair it with violet or green eyes....sighs...

pahunkboy -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/2/2009 3:39:34 AM)

I tried red and man- while it looked good at first- it went on to be the bozo show.

I wish you luck.

MsStarlett -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/2/2009 4:01:16 AM)

Thanks for all the great links Ladies!  I'll have to check them all out.

My ISP went AWOL last night, so I'm just now catching up.

My family is going to DragonCon - a Huge Sci/Fi-Fantasy-Gamer-Media convention in Atlanta this weekend.  Considering that my hair is now this rather cartoony shade of red, we have decided to just run with it.  My sons and I all play World of Warcraft and both my older son and I play 'Orcs'.  My younger son already has a "Scarlet Crusader" (Non-Player Charactor / enemy) costume from a couple of years ago.  Since my hair now matches my Orc... We're just going to run with it, toss some od bits of armor together, I'm making 'guild tabards' and the older one and I are going to go as low level players chasing the younger one.  It's actually turning out to be a rather fun 'accident'.

After the convention... I'm seriously going to work on this wacked out color!

One thing I can say for it... it is Bright and very Shiney!  It's actually kind of pretty once I get over the shock and adjust to being a darker shade than I normally go for.  But, as most of you who dye hair know, you don't want to process it to many times to close together... the hair will fall out!

Maybe they're just making the outside match the inside? [8D]

LaTigresse -> RE: Red Hair Dye (9/2/2009 6:56:01 AM)

I like to occasionally dye my hair a shade or two more red than it is naturally but nothing dramatic. I use one of the L'Oreal Feria colours.

My daughter, on the other hand, has tried everything from blonde to black to burgundy. None of them were big hits. I remember one big miss ended up being an odd shade resembling lavender. I laughed, she got mad.[:D] (she wasn't supposed to be dying her hair at all)

One thing I can say, if a person is almost entirely gray, it is probably better to have a professional do the dying. I am quite certain my father's wife isn't hoping for peach coloured hair, but that's what I've seen. She isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.
