peppermint -> Juniper/Barclay credit card (8/22/2009 10:31:19 PM)

Yesterday Sir received a strange check in the mail for nearly $400.  At the time we weren't even sure who or what it was from except that the note said Juniper Financial.  It was a generic type note stating that they were giving him back the overpayment on his account that he'd requested.  Of course, he hadn't overpaid any of his credit cards or requested a return of any overpayment.

While searching online we figured out that the credit card he'd applied for through Carnival Cruises while we were on cruise was Barclay Bank which we discovered is also Juniper Financial and we're assuming that the check is because of this account since the reference numbers in the note are the last 4 digits of that credit card.  When he went online to check his balance on that account yesterday it showed paid in full with nothing owing and of course no overpayment.

Could they want him to have a credit card balance?  Is this some strange way of giving him a balance?  Since the card was paid off a few months ago and he'd double checked that it WAS paid off, he might not check a statement.  Then he wouldn't see that he owed and might end up with several late payment fees if he cashes this check and it is from the credit card company..

Of course, we're not sure of any of this.  It's all speculation on my part.  At this time he is not planning on cashing the check.  Was just writing in here to see if anyone has also gotten one of these mysterious checks from Juniper Financial or any other company.   If you cashed it, what happened?

Call them and ask them.  If it is indeed a check disguised as a cash advance, it will say that clearly on the check.  It sounds like he either overpaid, and they're clearing old credits, or a mistake.  If you don't cash it and it is legitimately yours, in time it will go to their state's unclaimed assets department, and eventually it may be returned to you (a second time).  You should be able to find their phone number on the website.

Oh, and another thing occurred to me... since you applied on a cruise, it could be that they charged you $400 to cover incidentals (or a deposit, or something like that) and when the charge was reversed it created a credit situation.

It should show on your statement the balance credit of (+400) and then the deduction (-400) as they wrote you a check and deducted same from your account. I would call and ask them to send you a statement showing the overpayment credit and then the debit as they paid you the credit.

It sounds like a scam.

We were charged exactly what we charged while onboard ship.  There was no $400 charged for something else.  Yes, the credit card company will be called this morning.

We looked at the statement online.  It showed nothing except that the account was paid and nothing was owed as there is a zero balance.  There was no mention of the nearly $400 at all...either owed or overpaid.  That is why we are so suspicious of the check.  Why would a credit card company sent a check when there has been no overpayment?

I won't call it a scam, but it sure smells fishy to me.  The worst it would be is unethical.  I'll let you know what the credit card company says.

It's not -quite- a scam. Credit card companies do this sort of thing all the time - and you don't even need a zero-balance. They WANT you to owe them money and they DON'T want you to pay it off. Barkley/Juniper can't make any money from you if there is no balance against which to charge interest.

My advice: Call them on it and no matter what they say, cancel the account. You don't need it and when a credit card account is canceled at the customers' request it will NOT be a negative on your credit report.

Best of luck.

It will be interesting to find out what the credit card company says.  If it's a cash advance check, it would say that, but it clearly says it's an overpayment.  It would be fraudulent if they tricked you into cashing a check for a cash advance.  I think there's a little too much paranoia going on nowadays.  Don't attribute to malice what can be properly attributed to stupidity.

The only negative marks I saw on this company was that they hold your payment for two weeks before posting it to your account... far past the day the payment clears your bank.  This is a problem for people that have automatic billpay going thru the card (paying other bills with the card for the points) because it may cause an overlimit situation when in fact they had your payment in plenty of time to stay under the limit.

You could also ask a manager at your bank.   Often they can find out faster then the consumer.
