Every little helps: Tesco cashpoint gives out 'free money' to eager shoppers

Shoppers in Hounslow yesterday were treated to double-your-money deals by a Tesco Express cashpoint

SHOPPERS in Hounslow have discovered the true meaning of Tesco’s catchphrase 'Every Little Helps' after a curbside cash-point began handing out its own version of buy one, get one free.

The confused ATM dispensed thousands of pounds worth of ‘free money’ before the mistake was rectified. By this time vast queues had formed after eager west London shoppers summoned their friends and family to join in the five-hour free for all. According to a local businessman, some people were withdrawing from several different accounts in one go in an attempt to maximise their benefits.

I just posted the above OP because I found it to be strange. Not only did I find it to be strange but I also found it distasteful and somewhat sad.

I find the decision of Tesco's not to seek returns of the money taken to be somewhat puzzling. Why? Walk into the store and try to leave without paying for some groceries and see what happens.

This went on for five hours before it was noticed or reported. How many people withdrew money in those five hours?

How many of those people would seek to injure you if you as much as tried to make off with a couple of quid belonging to them?

How many of these people would have an issue with say, someone on welfare benefits making an extra couple of quid on the side? Or travelling on public transport without paying their fare?

Indeed, isn't it possible that a couple of these people would be the same ones who post on boards here whining about tribute dommes and scammers?

Just what sort of statement does what happened make about society?

Where do you stand on this issue?

well all they have to do is if there is a camera on the machine they will have the picture of the individuals and their accounts to match with and then give them a nice little letter or have them come into the bank and confront them

this is called grand theft and they will catch you whether you think or not

Last time I went to the cashpoint at my Tesco store I was simply praying I had some money in my account.
I picked up a witdrawal ticket that the person in front of me had left behind and it said their balance of account was £9,000 +
There is no justice with regard to the distribution of wealth just as there is no real justice in the world. Whilst two thirds of the world's population have no running water I would be very foolish indeed to think differently. Anyone can argue with me on this point but I will never believe otherwise.
However: there are very few transactions between human beings that do not involve or invoke the transfer of money. Save for acts of love, intimacy and benevolence. And thus money (one of the last taboos) has become dharma. It is a righteous duty to behave with virtue. And perhaps the only virtuous behaviour which is shared by all faiths and religions is: behave towards others as you would be done by. Acts of dharma have a way of coming back atcha. What goes around comes around. In this I have absolute faith.
So: the question. Was it actualy stealing from the cash point? Who suffered as a onsequence? Whose money was it anyway? What was the taker about to use the money for?
All these questions would have to be subjected to an ethics enquiry in order to determine in each and every case, whether the person was stealing or not.
What would I have done? To be honest it would have been a spur of the moment thing. It would have depended whether I felt I had enough money to feed the kids that day or not.
Greater forces will judge me in the end.

1. Yes. If it does not belong to you it is stealing.
2. Tesco, whoever that is.
3. Tesco, again since they inexplicably decided not to pursue the matter.
4. Irrelevant. Theft is theft.

I have always thought it far more simple.

Take something that does not belong to you and you are stealing.

It is stealing plain and simple. people have no conscience any more. Common sense isn't common any more. there is no shame in what ones does. What truly defines you is what you do when nobody is looking....

People will not speak up and as a group say this is wrong..they just look away..
