Ive been asked to be an OP in one of the chatrooms and the owner said it would be a good idea to register My profile on CM so that noone else could use My name in chat (I've never heard of this).  I thought you got a profile n password and that was it.

Anyone know how to do this?

thanks in advance

Depends on the IRC server but from memory this link has the answers you seek:

http://www.deepspace2.org/nickserv.htm#REGISTER

FC, I know the individual words in that link made sense, but I didn't follow one thing they said to do.
Good luck op is all I can say.

/msg nickserv REGISTER password [email]

This line above is the most important line concerning registering names and how it was done here from memory.

You send a message to the nickserv using the ‘/msg’ command as above ‘REGISTER’ is the specific nickserv command and password is the password for the nickname. The [email] bit is optional for some places and mandatory for others. The name you are registering is the name that you are currently using as set by the '/nick' command.

When logging on or switching to a registered nickname with the '/nick' command you'll need to identify you are the legitimate owner of the name as below:

/msg nickserv IDENTIFY password

in the line above ‘IDENTIFY’ is the nickserv command and password is the password you set for that specific nickname you have switched to or connected with.

You get a minute to identify you are the legitimate owner (as above) of a registered nickname after logging on with the registered name or switching your name to the registered name otherwise it'll switch your nickname to one of the available guest numbers. i.e guest12 etc.

Regarding the identify part, from memory this isn't how it was done here but there are instructions to follow when the warning to enter a password comes up i.e. when you switch to a nickname that has been registered.
