I'm not saying your doctor is right, in believing the elderly should be denied treatment, but they do cost three times as much than non-elderly people. I found the following fact interesting as well, about 50 percent of total medical costs are attributed to 5 % of the population.

Anyway, it looks like your doctor has crunched the numbers, and in his head determined they aren't worth the return on investment. If you want to look at in cold terms.

Essentially the 5% are running the healthcare system broke, and a large fraction of the 5% are elderly.

First I took him in to an eye clinic to get a replacement pair of reading glasses. So, he goes in to talk to the woman that runs the place and tells her he is there to pick up the reading glasses he ordered in, and she insists on giving him a vision test. This is despite the fact that he specifically told her he had just had minor surgery on one of his eyes and it was still a bit blurry. She ignores this and makes him take the test before she will give him the glasses. The result? He fails the test and she comes out of the room and tells me that he 'has terrible vision in one eye. i'm sorry but I have to revoke his license' The guy has been driving for 70 years and hasn't had an accident. Yet without even consulting him she just fills out some paperwork to get his license revoked. Real nice way to treat a senior isn't it?

Clearly I don't know the whole story, but society as a whole has become a bit....miffed at the 'seniors' who are plowing into crowded areas with an increasing frequency because they couldn't see something....mistook the gas for the brake, etc. Perhaps there was something the eye clinic lady was mandated to do in response. I know lots of places are trying to enact or have enacted laws requiring more driving tests for seniors in an attempt to save crowds of people from being run over.

The other side to your situation, as I've noticed, is that some people seem to get 'less assertive' as they age. My mom is one of them. You couldn't tell her something she didn't like when I was younger without REALLY hearing about it from her. Now that she's older, she's much less aggressive/assertive. I see things that she lets people do to her and it pisses me off. Then they get to deal with me. And they usually don't like that.

In your situation, I'd probably have stepped in and told the bitch to give him his damned glasses or she'd not only lose our business, but she'd also be on the news that night explaining why she's being sued for denying someone care that they'd asked for. But that's just me.

It's of course bad when seniors get mistreated..
but there are also seniors or people that become aggressive as they age. There are plenty of seniors who believe that just because they're older they are better than you smarter than you have more right than you and are in general the kings&queens of the whole friggin world who can do whatever they like whenever they like and if some innocent soul gets in their way....... there's no returning back from that one.

Yep. We just had a thread here a month ago discussing how a cop (rightly) tasered an old bat that took that attitude with him. She threw out the age card from minute one and when her antics endangered them both, he had no choice but to zap her.

people speak about abuse... then do nothing... even within the medical field. standing in a room yelling at a nurse wont get you jack besides laughed at when you leave.

if this is happening, report them to the board of nursing.

Oh....no worries. They have been reported.

A sharing, my wife was terminal, (Cancer) a stroke occurred but the cancer went into remission briefly, she was unable to speak or attend to her own bodily demands and general hygiene. She was 41, the doctors wanted to write her off and the nursing home claimed she required more care then they were capable of. I took her home and for the next weight years she smiled every day, eight years of a deep penetrating love I would have lost if I allowed the doctors and nurses to have their way. Eight years more of the wonder and splendor of this woman her friends and relatives would have lost.
Doctors are not always right.

When dad was in the hospital- I noticed he got better attention being that family visited and asked alot of questions.

I dont think it is a conspiracy- just that-when the boss is there- people work as they are supposed to.
