This is an international board with lots of people from the US so football here is a pretty ambiguous term.

So do you actually mean soccer or that American version of rugby where they're allowed to pass forward and stop for a breather every few minutes?

It's just kicking off babe ..... (music) Hail - Hail - The Celts Are Here - What The Hell Do We - Care Now !

(The USA won the world cup once you know)(true)

Ghod will return, it's predicted, in another form, for me ... Ghod is a hero.

There was a special bond between Jinky and Henrik, beyond the "pale". (and beyond the grave, I suspect)

Maybe the football players will go on strike & we will all get some peace without it this year.

Isn't that the "precise" definition of "Football" in the USA ?

(they got one bit very right though, which means you can enjoy the game with a beer)

(if they could get the grannysmiths in the stadia ... I might even go push up their bar take)

OK ... are we talking a year without "touchdowns" ... or a year without "goals" (one ... will not happen)

Jay Cutler, Devin Hester & Earl Bennett would be a good QB/Receivers combo this year

Rugby ain't a sport, it's a game we used to play as children called tackle the guy with the ball, only it's played by grown up poofers in jolly ole England. It consists of one big group hug followed by a mate running with the ball until someone is about to hit him, so he throws it to someone else because he's afraid to get hit....That succinctly sums up the game of Rugby.

I would just love for you to walk into any bar in the North of England, Australia or South Africa and repeat that POV.

In my former persona I played rugby - both rugby union and rugby league at almost all levels, my former clubs included Bradford, London Scottish where I was discovered by then the chairman of Fulham RLFC (now the London Broncos) and the then coach, an Australian by the name of Bev Risman, and spent two seasons playing professionally before succumbing to a knee injury which forced me out of the game. I have played in matches against people like Ellery Hanley and Martin Offiah. I was nicknamed at one point 'the crocodile' because I was big, fast and able to take out players cleanly with my tackling.

With the exception of ice hockey rugby league is arguably one of the most demanding toughest sports there is. In union I played lock forward but in rugby league I played prop forward, the slowest of the forwards who's objective was to make driving runs down the centre of the pitch to advance the line.

The line here refers to the line of forwards and that line, together with all the other players are in constant motion. A match lasted for 80 minutes and trust me, you spend all those eighty minutes in motion running. Yes you pass the ball to avoid being tackled, because of the six tackle rule where once there are six tackles made there is a scrumdown but a lot of forwards also have the ability to prevent tackles. A scrumdown can be quite dangerous, you can clash heads and if you are a prop forward or a hooker (another type of forward) you also get used to being kicked in the face. This explains how I lost almost all my back teeth and had my nose broken.

Bear in mind I was playing in the 1980's, when a lot of players still weren't wearing protective pads. There was none of the dramatics you now see on a soccer pitch when someone gets tackled, you simply got up and played on.

I can't see how you can even compare it to a children's game, it doesn't even come close.

Back when I was into it I was THE HOME of Monday night football. It was on ABC and they mixed the sound right. Crowd noise from the back speakers. My system could segregate this, but then I would also be able to switch the front channels independently to the local radio staion. Radio announcers are so much better, and with five or six hundred watts under the hood you could go to the john and not miss a thing. Hook all that up to an old Advent projection TV and you are the hit of the hood. If you don't remember those Advents, not a one of them really worked right, except mine. Near perfect geometry and convergence. Took me years to get it this way as well, it was not an easy restoration.

The sound, as I mentioned was awesome, and in the back speakers you would hear what you think you would never hear out of the crowd. All the cussing and shit that was really transmitted, but not heard by most was very apparent on my system. "Tommy, how many beers do we need ?....  ...... ...... OK gimme a hundred bucks and I'll be right back". "Sacked again, when are they going to get rid of that lanky MF ?". Shit like this. I also used to make boneless chicken wings, which are basically a breast cut into thin wedges, fried and spiced and supplied with sauce of course. The beer also flowed quite freely.

Yes, my house was THE place to be for Monday night football. I went sour on the whole idea of spectator sports at one time, but I have to admit, those nights were a good time. Movies too. My buddy owned a video tape rental store and I had a special contract with him, Movie is $0 a day, due back whenever I am good and ready, unless he got down to his last copy, in which case it was bring it back now. You can take it back tomorrow I just need it today. In fact he would bring it, as soon as he was assured of having a copy in stock to rent. See it wasn't the two bucks a night that was important to the business, it was having the hot movies available. That was what he needed to sustain the business. Other than that, I had Days of Thunder for months, a few Star Trek movies and all that, and a few of them simply never got returned. Nobody cares, unless he needs it and doesn't have it. I could get new releases under almost the same "contract" but he generally wanted those back alot sooner i.e. not a year. LOL.

One of the things that kept me into football for a time was that it was one game, do or die. Win or lose,,,,, TODAY. Baseball and basketball play sets of games, not in football and as the saying goes "On any given Sunday". But when I lost the illusion that "my team" was "my team" I lost interest. Not one fucking player was from Cleveland, the owner of the team was not from Cleveland, so how is that a Cleveland team ?

So yes I will now have a look at a football game, but I won't be hooting and hollering like the old days. It has been sufficiently delustered for me. Of course I would have to plug the TV in. I don't feel like reaching back there, do you ?

Just saying, I didn't just reject spectator sports, I reject the media period. Nothing personal. I have however expressed dismay for many years the fact that in this society, one can get paid more to play than to work.

I also have some memorabilia from the old Browns, the Art Modell Browns, not their replacement, the Al Learner Browns. Anyone want to buy it ? I have too much stuff !
