What advice from experience can anyone give on using this type of whip. We just bought one and were given some advice from the seller but if anyone else has experience i would welcome advice...we are both novices in giving and receiving its sting but did start out slowly this past weekend with good results....thanks to all who answer!

Hi otter

I can't use anything with length without nearly taking my own eye out! I now have a snake which is 4ft in length and much easier (for me) to handle and crack.
If you have the technique then all you need to do is practice, practice, practice. Find yourself a marking to aim for and don't whatever you do, start by practicing on your partner.
Where you shown how to take care of your whip?

singletails are awesome - even though humans, drywall and light fixtures can be at risk around one in use.  I learned quickly that wasp nests and their occupants get really testy around singletails LOL

any length whip has potential for a painful 'wrap' but practice improves the odds of avoiding that :)

My Lady just recently received a black and red, 4 foot, 16 plait kangaroo snakewhip for her birthday made by Peter Jack in New Zealand.  It is fabu and we are so excited to be learning about whips and starting to use it!

My understanding is that a snakewhip is braided down to a point where a replaceable single leather or nylon fall is attached.  This fall can be short or long - ours is leather and is 28 inches.  Attached at the bottom is a replaceable nylon cracker that is tied on.

Signal whips are braided all the way down to the end where a leather or nylon cracker is woven in - these are not usually replaceable except by someone who really understands what they are doing.  You can also tie on a nylon cracker to a signal whip.

Throwing our whip has really worked it in and it is so much more supple now than just a month ago.   It is untreated with anything other than beeswax which my Lady has rubbed in twice since we got it.  As it is nearly 6 feet with the fall and cracker, it takes very little effort to get an amazing sting on the throw and my Lady is actually finding it easier to throw than a shorter whip that takes much more wrist and arm manipulation.  The longer length however, creates a difference in timing of the throws - as the whip is longer, it takes longer to reset and throw again and thus with our whip you don't get the rapid work of a 3 foot or even 4 foot whip that is faster and more wrist manipulated for rapid stings.

The beautiful thing about this conundrum is that we can get another one that is closer to 4 foot and one that is 3 foot...so YAYs!  What's bad about having more whips?!

Practice on something not human. I suggest a pillow that you don't care about.

Having been on the receiving end of a single tail many times, I know how they can FEEL! That being said, I didn't want to use it on Otter until I HAD practiced A LOT! Best intentions! We played with it the first night. Now, that being said, I wasn't hurling it at full force.....far from it. I was tapping him with it, since I knew I had very little experience throwing it, plus the whip was stiff and new.

Now, about 6 weeks later, the whip is more supple, and I have a better idea of what force gets what result. (It doesn't take much <grin>). My inexperience lends a bit of edge play to our whip sessions, for sure.

As for safety - I always tell Otter to cover his eyes and don't look up unexpectedly, cause if he loses an eye, it would be his own fault! <tongue in cheek>

The goggles, they do nothing!

When it comes to whips, and this might sound silly, but is it just the butt that gets whipped or the back as well?  I'd like to be able to go swimming or to the beach without a ton of nasty welts and scars on my back to match the ones I have on my chest.

Ah whips....

Minimal Effort, Maximum Punishment.

I would be proud to show off my welts and scars.

... I've changed my mind.  I am suddenly reminded why I 1) like woman and 2) like dominant woman.

Catwoman. Michelle Pfieffer. GOD YES.

... can I be a bad man now for justice to be inflicted upon?  Kthnx*droolwhimper*

Er.  Apologies.  She's a bit of a weakness. Gah.  Going to go do something else now.  (no, NOT that)

Okay, I forgive you for your mispelling...I sincerely thought you were referring to radio antennas (which can sting as well), not a single whip. I am a former communications rat in the military so I had to deal with singal antennas all of the time...

Thank you to everyone else who also supplied additional info..also to Shaharthornem I thought the only name was singletail myself before I went to the first site that was recommended to me at the store we bought it at and the site is www.happytails.com  and that is where we first saw the video mentioned above called "singletails in the scene"....so no problemo..I never did see what you wrote before you edited it as this is my first time reading the responses..I am still not sure if there is a difference between singletails and signal whips....hmmmm

Edited to add: I found this interesting site online that explains something about crackers on the end of the whips: http://bullwhip-info.com/whip_information/signalwhip_snakewhip_diff.html
