maleslut4Female -> Renaissance Faires and BDSM--help a beginner understand the connection please? (8/9/2009 11:32:54 PM)

Hi Everyone,

I am a relative novice who is still learning about the lifestyle and the various interconnections I've noticed. One thing that has become very apparent to me is that a lot of BDSM folk are also into going to Renaissance Faires. As someone who has never been to a Renaissance Faire and doesn't really know much about it, am I missing something? Are the 'ren faires' for BDSM play, i.e. for a slave like me?

Thanks in advance for any and all that can help me with this!

As far as I know there is no actual connection. I doubt the percentage of BDSMers is any higher among ren fair goers than in the general population.

To me a renessance faire is a vanilla thing, one that I just love to go to. I like the dressing up part of it. But also the admosphere, music, food. It's not BDSM related.

I think you would be mistaken there, Arpig, especially when it comes to those that work Faires, but also those who go to them. No one blinks at things like corsets, floggers, cuffs, slaves being led on collar or auctioned off, stocks, masks, or many other things that some of us find fun when we do it at a Faire. The ones I worked for a dozen years had many performers who were kinky, gay ,or both, who were happy to find a place where they could be themselves in public, without being judged.

@WyldHrt
That is part of the fun, that nobody blinks at corsets, floggers, cuffs etc.

I just remembered that I bought floggers and masks at "ren fairs"

There is a leather stand, at the fair that comes to Detroit, with a back room for kinksters. I got an awesome pair of cuffs there and they had some wonderful floggers. Personnally I just like walking around and looking at all the pretty ladies. Some of those breas.....errr. I mean corsets are amazing.

slavekal -> RE: Renaissance Faires and BDSM--help a beginner understand the connection please? (8/10/2009 6:04:13 AM)

Yeah.  We got great stuff from their back room.  They recognized us for what we were right off the bat and took us right to the back.  All the corsets and role play and costuming are all very compatible with this lifestyle.

I go because I enjoy them and have since I was young. It does not seem to have anything to do with the fact that I am into BDSM, I just enjoy the faires for what they are in themselves. I like the games, the food and the costumes. My daughter enjoys them as well, so I think they are great fun for families.

I started off my journey into out-of-mainstream life as paid staff at a Renaissance Faire. Gotta watch those -- they're "gateway" recreation. *grins*

No it is just an event where people reinact a period in tme, they are in costumes and the people are welcome in costume as well. It is one of the few places that walking around with a slave in chains and collar would not raise any eye brows

There used to be an unofficial kink day at the big Ren Faire in LA.

Lets see. They are reenacting a period of time when women were submissive to men and considered property. They had slaves. Bondage and Torture was an accepted policy.

Nawwww. Nothing anyone around here would be interested in:)

OK, it would seem I stand corrected. You learn something new everyday around here.[:)]

Ahhhh, don't feel bad. I didn't 'get' it at first either until a lifestyle friend pointed out the same things to me. Yeah...makes sense lol. I've never been to a Ren fair so I'll have to check one out someday.

MasterSlaveLA -> RE: Renaissance Faires and BDSM--help a beginner understand the connection please? (8/10/2009 2:13:46 PM)

There are a lot of "BDSM folks" who drive, eat, sleep, and crap too... wanna draw that parallel as well?  I've accompanied a couple people to a couple of these things... didn't care much for them. I'm also one who never cared much for the club/munch thing either... personally, all of these sorts of things just seem far too cartoonish for my taste. Obviously others feel differently.

DesFIP -> RE: Renaissance Faires and BDSM--help a beginner understand the connection please? (8/10/2009 2:20:27 PM)

If you want to go to a Ren Fair, do so. If you don't want to, don't. Lots of people here like Ren Fairs, lot's don't.

Same thing for any other subculture you could name, there will be those interested in them and those who aren't.
Startrek, Star Wars, cosplay, SCA, rare book conventions, cooking classes etc. We are all multifaceted people who like various different things.

I would have trouble deciding which to go to if offered a Star Trek Con and a rare book show on the same day but there isn't any actual interconnectedness between the two.

AlexandraLynch -> RE: Renaissance Faires and BDSM--help a beginner understand the connection please? (8/10/2009 6:15:13 PM)

The first time I walked into a room and saw my current sub, I said, "Sir Henry, I didn't know you were into this!!!" Because I knew him from doing SCA. It's not predictive by any means, but the Venn diagrams just overlap a lot. I know ten or twenty people of both genders who are simultaneously into lifestyle stuff, into the SCA, into science fiction fandom, into RPG gaming, and practice some form of paganism or Buddhism. It's not because you "have to" be lifestyle to like any of that, or if you like any of that that you will be lifestyle, but I think the mindset of people within the living history communities is one in which kink can be explored without a great deal of angst.

That'd be my experience as well, although I don't have the data to back it up.

There does seem to be a definite overlap between the geek communities and the BDSM community (and the poly community for that matter).  I'd say correlation, not causation however.
