popeye1250 -> Lobster now cheaper than hotdogs! (8/2/2009 4:35:44 PM)

I was in Yahoo finance and they had a article about how lobster is now cheaper than hotdogs due to a falloff in demand worldwide due to the economy.
In 2006 the "off-the-boat" price was $10 a pound now it's down to $2.50.
Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight? I'm heading down to the market to buy three of them and a pound of scallops to go with them!
So, help out the Maine Lobstermen and treat yourself to some "Lobsta'.
It won't be this cheap for long.
I was looking at pictures of the Maine Lobster Festival held over this weekend and my mouth was watering!!![sm=hyper.gif]

About 3 weeks ago i got a 1 lb. Lobster..the price...$30.00 for one lobster...

I take a mallet and crack the back of a Lobster. i put it in the oven and bake it for 45 min with butter on the back of the Lobster..
If i want more butter i melt some in the microwave.... MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm...

This is bad news. I would rather eat a hotdog..

Huh?  The off the boat price does NOT include retailer markup, which is like 100%.  So lobster would run over $5/lb.  Can those Yahoo finance wizards not find hot dogs for less than $5/lb?

Thanks for the heads up, Popeye.  Normally, I wouldn't even glance at the lobster in my local supermarket, but the tails were about 1/2 the normal price.  Surf and turf, tonight [:D]

The local Wallyworld here has hotdogs for 97 cents a pound. Still prefer the lobster though....

Ok now you got me interested. How the hell do you cook lobster? Boil? I'm in Louisiana so maybe I should pick up some crawfish. Definitely lobster when I get home. *I'm gonna eat ya little lobster. I'm gonna eat ya little lobster*

DomMeinCT -> RE: Lobster now cheaper than hotdogs! (8/2/2009 11:24:28 PM)

Maybe not cheaper than hotdogs around here, but a pretty good price compared to steak:

6 lb. + lobsters $5.99/lb.

If you want to cook it while its still alive you either boil it or steam it. Not all that different from how you cook crawdads except for size. Be aware that the air trapped inside the shell escapes as the lobster cooks and makes a high pitched sound which people sometimes think is the lobster's scream.

A IMO better way is to roast the lobster. You split the bug in half, right down the middle with a good kitchen knife while its still alive so not so good if you're squeamish, and put the halves on a sheet pan (meat side up), brush on some olive oil or melted butter and roast. Only takes a few minutes and the lobster doesn't get waterlogged and the only cracking is the legs and claws.

This is wonderful news for the boys that would like to take Me out to dinner.

Thanks. I think I'll go with the boiling this time.

Well I didn't find any of those $2.50 lobsters. The two I found at the local grocery were $9 a pound. Tasty bastards. Cooked em with some garlic, onion and butter. I might have to buy these more often.

CaringandReal -> RE: Lobster now cheaper than hotdogs! (8/6/2009 5:38:14 AM)

An erudite friend recently told me that lobster was so cheap and common in Victorian England that a law was passed against serving it to prisoners too many times in a week. It was considered cruel.

blacksword404 -> RE: Lobster now cheaper than hotdogs! (8/6/2009 6:19:59 AM)

That's cruel huh? Bet there are plenty who would love to be terrorized with lobster and shrimp and old grape juice. [:D]
