I suppose the difference is that the English evolved into a system of religious tolerance in order to create a business friendly climate - which in turn generated more religious tolerance; whereas the Eastern Europeans did not. Edited to add: there is a large Jewish community in Manchester where I live - I say community but you wouldn't know they were Jewish unless they told you. Their ancestors are from Eastern Europe and came here to escape persecution and take advantage of a meritocracy.
