Is anyone surprised?

I'm not. I've been avoiding this stuff for years, whenever possible:

MSG and weight gain.

Not surprised. This was an "old wives tale" for years upon years....made you gain weight, gave you migraines, made you bloated, etc...I try to avoid it but it's in almost every food imaginable.

Indeed, MSG is hard to avoid.

This is another good reason to avoid processed foods altogether.

Guess what....

Gum can make you gain weight.
So can Water.

Here's one for you, Did you know you can Overdose on Water? Yup there is such thing as a Lethal Dose of Water.

Cellery burns more calories eating then you get out of it so you could actaully stave to death eating nothing but cellery. And have a Disended Belly for it.

McDonalds Salads are Designed to be dry so that eating them without dressing makes them tase bad and the dressings..... ALL OF THEM.... Have nearly TWICE the amount of fat than they shuold have and the Fat Free Dressings... Look at the Calories and Servings per container.

In Some States BREATHING is Worse for your health than being a Fire Fighter.

We are ALL gunna Die and I for one have no intentions of doing it and being Miserable.

Red Dye # 40 is Suspected of being a helping factor to the onslaught of Parkinsons Disease and try to find ANY sweet or canned product that doesn't have it.

The Aluminum in TV Dinners may have cause Alheimers in many Americans

The Aluminum Sulfide in your Underarm Deodorant may cause it too.

Truth is NO ONE REALLY KNOWS.

Here is an Example. Is Milk Good for you when you are sick? In the 1980's It was NOT in the 90's It was Great and it did a body good.

How about Eggs? Will the choleterol Kill you or is it the Good Kind? and exactly what KIND of Cholesterol does Cherrioes actually help you reduce?

Seriously people just be Healthy and try to be active and most of these things will hardly affect your life and if they do...... well such is life.

You can find something bad about everything. Everybody used to think soy was good for ya 'cause in asia etc they use it..well whops recent study shows it affects western women dfifferently. I agree with Steel of Utah 279%!
Bottom line is; you are going to die anyway and everything you eat kills you..even breathing kills you slowly.

That article didn't explain the real source of MSG very well.  It's a natural compound found in meat. If you see a product labeled "no MSG added" that doesn't have MSG on the ingredient list but contains meat, that's the reason it doesn't say "MSG free" instead.

In its natural state, MSG is bound with a protein.  The artificial stuff is not, which causes the body to absorb it too fast. I would bet it's only the artificial stuff that causes problems, similar to creatine.

Some are willing to put forth the time, effort, and sacrifice to help stack the deck in their favor in terms of health; and others are not willing. It's simply a matter of choice... whether it is selective eating vs non-selective eating, or being physically active vs being sedentary.

Yet another additive that wreaks havoc in the human body and that will remain safely packed away in everyday food stuffs.... GRAND!!!!! Good thing I read ingredient lists! Always have, always will, and even know what I am looking for including the stuff that no one is bothering to acknowledge is BAD for people.

all this as I have M. going to the store to get some more ribs, so I can fire up the smoker tomorrow and make them.  Yep, fatty, salty, sugary, slow smoked so all those carcinogens in there too...  Guess what, I'm going to die, we all are.  Thing is, I'm not going to sit around for this short splotch of time that I'm here being too terrified to live anyway.  That's the real waste.  No matter how healthy someone eats, how many labels they read, no one is going to live forever.  Although with my family history, no matter how bad I treat myself, I'll probably be 90 anyway, whether I like it or not.  Oh well, that just means more years of eating ribs and brisket and drinking gin and tequila (but not together... trust me on this), and sitting too close to the tv, and having the music on too loud, all that shit that's going to kill me supposedly.

Now, as far as the msg causing obesity.  I say, bullshit.  How much msg is eaten in china or japan?  A metric fuckton.  How many of them are obese?  Not very.  Thing is, they get off their asses, unlike the majority of us lazy shitheads in the states.  See, that's what causes obesity.  Sitting around for hours on end, arguing on the internet about MSG and watching home made documentaries about aspartame.  I would wager to say that 2 people, live next door to eachother, they both eat the same exact MSG laden things every day, but one drives the 3 blocks to the store, one walks it.  There's going to be a huge difference in the health of both of them.  Let's make it even bigger, a MILE (god forbid).  Yeah, sounds like a lot, it's not, it's 8 blocks.  But, god forbid, we might get hit by a car while crossing the street, or might get the cancer from breathing the air outside while walking, or get stung by a mosquito and come down with malaria or some bullshit like that.

Screw that, I'm going to enjoy life, I'm going to drop a piece of my sandwich on the ground, pick it up, wipe it off, eat it!  Just to spite everyone.  It didn't hurt my grandpa or grandma, it didn't hurt anyone.  I'm not going to live in fear of every damned little ingredient.

In my case, BKSir it is the difference between a moment of pleasure and a getting to live a normal life. With fibro, these things wreak all kinds of havoc on my system. I can eat things that are a little less interesting (though herbs and spices do wonders!) or be in even more pain and even more exaughsted all the time. Life is short, so live well. Living well, however, will mean different things to different people.

the thing is that our grandpa or grandma didnt eat the same crap were being feed today in the stores and the fastfood chains. even the fruits and vegetables are no good for you. they travel many miles and sit in warehouses and shelfs for weeks before you even see them in stores.they pick tomatoes green, ship them many miles, gas them to turn them red = no vitamins. most food today is all carbs, little or no nutition. this was not the case 50 years ago.

In fact MSG was made differently 50 years ago as well. Even regular salt was diffeent 50 years ago.

MSG used to be harveted from the ocean, some plant. In that, most imputiries might well be beneficial to the body. Now MSG is harvested from something grown on farms, IIRC it was sugar cane or beets or something like that. Doesn't sound quite as healthy does it ?

My mom as active and watched what she ate and was healthy and svelte her whole life. Walked early in the morning daily. She monitored my dads diet as he was always overweight. He also smoked cigarettes for years but quit at the age of 50. Although now hes taken up cigars in the last few years. Guess what? Dad is healthy as a horse and caring for mom who has been stricken with A.L.S. She can still walk but you can barely understand her. Her breathing capacity is down to 35%. So much for all that healthy living.

Ah, see, now that's a different matter entirely and I completely understand.  I've got a good many friends with things like Fibro, Crohns, Diabetes, etc, and that can certainly cause issues.

My thoughts were directed at the "typical healthy person", who spends all their time worrying about every little thing, instead of enjoying life while they have it.

By the way, LP, great new pic there, looking good hon. :)

I've heard these "Well, this guy smoked 2 packs a day all his life and lived to age 95; but that guy never smoked a day in his life he died at 50. Therefore, I'm gonna smoke all I want to" and similar arguments, for most of my adult life.

In my opinion, this type of argument is simply a self-justification attempt for one's unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, whether it be non-selective eating, sedentary lifestyle, or consumption of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. In the end, people will typically believe what they want to believe.

No one is saying that selective lifestyle behaviors will guarantee a longer life. Certainly genetics play a role. And there may be other factors involved that we may not be aware of when someone with a healthy lifestyle has died young, such as past exposure to environmental toxins in one's lifetime, decades of unresolved negative emotions, etc.

There is, however, something to be said about those who constantly worry about avoiding every higher-risk food known to man. If a man's level of concern about stacking the health deck in his favor is so high that it creates constant negative emotion, then his selective eating lifestyle may be doing him more harm than good.
