LillyoftheVally -> Thrown to the Wolves (7/23/2009 4:08:32 AM)

I have inadvertently done a test, as this is a new profile and some people know who I am (yeah like I made it hidden) they will know I was pretty well established as an over obsessive poster. However I have noticed that due to my perceived newness some members have been far more likely to get the torches out than they would have been previously (I mean I never got it with my last name)

I am only writing this because I know that it is a pretty frequent question about this site, whether the length of time someone has been here or the icon under their image impacts on how people receive them. It does [;)]

i can't help but wonder the reason for the new name? Perhaps the same issues you had under the old name are still with you?

Of course it does.  That pattern never changes with forums.

If you can get used to experiencing it and not cave in to the desire to be known for what/who you once were (doing that destroys the learning aspects of being unknown and not having one's ideas treated with automatic acceptance), it can teach you a a great deal. But not everyone needs or wants that sort of learning. Losing the perks of online social tenure is definitely an "acquired taste" and, like slavery, not good or useful for the majority of people.

[&o]  It happens, badly at times. I made a few posts looking for some thoughts and advice so I could stop chasing my tail and try to get another perspective and people who have known me for a long time under my old nick treated me like shit and jumped down my throat. I wish some people could ignore the number of a person's posts and just respond to the question or post. But apparently, how often you've posted or how "new" you appear to be seems to make a difference.

The difference is, no one knows my old nick - and I plan to keep it that way. It's interesting to see how people perceive me differently with this ID. Good and bad.

Good luck, Lilly.

Indeed it does. E.g. in my attempts to stay on the less bad side of Mod11, I am more inclined to hide the posts of those who have less than 200 posts than I am inclined to hide the posts of those who have 200 posts or more.

As for myself: I have not noticed any change in people's perception in correlation to my number of posts.

Kalista07 -> RE: Thrown to the Wolves (7/23/2009 6:12:21 AM)

Well, dang... i'm apparently not quick enough or smart enough or whatever enough to figure out who you were before..But everyone deserves a second chance... i say just make it worth it..

LaTigresse -> RE: Thrown to the Wolves (7/23/2009 7:44:25 AM)

I seriously don't care how long a person has been posting, only the perception I have of their mental competence as displayed in their posts.

Most of the new people don't even register on my radar. Then again there are many long term posters that are not blips on my radar either. It all depends upon the nature of their posts. Lately, my time here has been limited so I do a quick skim through on topics, if nothing appeals to me I disappear again. OR, if I see a poster that I've always enjoyed, has commented to something I may take a quick look to see what they had to say and if the topic was more interesting than the title conveyed.

As one poster in this thread has so graciously provided an example.....sometimes when I see someone behaving like a total moron, I may comment upon it, but just as often not.

We have long term posters that do just as good a job of providing fodder for that, the new people do not have the market cornered. At times, I am sure I am included in that group. We all have our good days.......[:D]

LilyoftheValley: I think for the majority of us, it isn't the fact that a new poster has a small post count or because they are new, it's the fact that many who do start threads are asking things which is either an over asked question or they fail to think before they speak.

GreedyTop -> RE: Thrown to the Wolves (7/23/2009 8:08:13 AM)
