Had that story made it to the local news, the people here would have been clamoring, yet again, for Sheiff Joe's resignation. Wouldn't have done any good, if the feds can't stop him, we mere citizens can't. The man has gone past his prime, I wish that we could get someone else down here.
No need to apologize. I wasn't directing my rant at you, sorry if it seemed that way. I just hate the SOB. I have a friend that lives in Phoenix, and she spent a little time in that "tent city" for fraud. I just started reading up on some of the goings-on in that department, and it amazed me that he keeps getting elected. He routinely harrasses journalists and local politicians with his deputies. I read a story about his deputies getting into a confrontation with a journalist when they were scouring public records in a city office looking for dirt on a city government leader. The journalist wanted to see what they were looking at, the clerk said under FOIA he could. The deputies threatened to arrest him, and taunted him to try it. The city attorney and city police showed up, and a confrontation ensued between the city police, the city attorney, Joe's thugs, and the journalist. I'd be embarrassed if that crazy bastard was my Sheriff.
He's had several inmates die while in custody of his jail. The county has settled several lawsuits in the millions of dollars with inmates' families because of these deaths, and other's because of physical abuse, denial of medical care, etc. He's just a bully.
On the immigrant thing, I understand the frustration. But he doesn't send them back when caught, which is what the INS does. He keeps them in jail to teach them a lesson. So people in your county are paying for them ultimately. He isn't teaching anyone shit with his tactics. The criminal recidivism rate has not budged significantly since his tenure. It's all populist grandstanding to get his mug on the television and papers. He likes the attention; most bullies do.
