Disgusting... What would they need the extra funds for?

DesFIP -> RE: Scott Peterson's family seeks help funding appeal (7/17/2009 9:26:44 PM)

It is very hard for a parent to ever believe their child can do anything as horrendous as this man has done. Denial.

Apparently they are seeking better counsel.

Maybe Jerry Lewis could hold a telethon.....or they could run a win a date with Scott raffle? just spit balling here, but I think they are going to have to thing "outside of the box" with this one.

There was a new report a long time ago that he had women writing to him in jail. Just like a number of other decent looking men who were convicted of murder.  They had a following of women from the report.

Did you all notice how thin he was in the picture? I guess the food isn't to his liking.

i thought an appeal for a death row inmate was mandatory and paid for by the state?

He wants better representation than he would get from the public defender's office.

Which fits the image I have of him as being a self-centered bastard who doesn't care about anyone else.

he had a pretty good lawyer for the first trial. I wonder what his parents paid for that one..

I live very close to where Scott and Lacy lived together. This made HUGE headlines in our little town when it happened to begin with, and I can't believe this man is bothering with anything but sitting in his cell and thinking about whatever disgusting things go through a man's head who's guilty of a murder like this.

I wouldn't give anything to anyone that would benefit him in any way.  Anyone who would is as messed up as he is, or they're his family-- because no parent wants to believe their child could do something so awful.

I would like to know 'on what grounds' does he think he deserves a new trial. It will be denied by a judge anyway.

because he is shocked that no one believed his bullshit?

I wonder how many people are that gullible and are actually contributing to this sad case of a human being. In my mind not actually a.....

LafayetteLady -> RE: Scott Peterson's family seeks help funding appeal (7/18/2009 2:20:49 PM)

Apparently the funds are being requested for some type of "investigation." Death row inmates get mandatory appeals, which are paid for by the state. The public defenders that are used for appeals are not the "run of the mill" just out of law school guys used for the trials. They are specialists. While it is not something I would ever want to be doing, they typically are pretty good at their jobs. These cases are usually absent lack of evidence and those public defenders are usually fighting to simply convert the sentence to life imprisonment, or overturn the verdict on a technicality.

Keep in mind that if the verdict is "overturned" it doesn't mean that the defendant is then free. The appellate courts simply send the case back down to the lower courts for a new trial where the "technical" issue is "fixed" during the new trial. Doing such does not attach double jeopardy which would prevent the guy from being tried twice for the same crime.

Honestly, I barely followed the case. I know he was found guilty and given the death penalty. The little I did follow about the case, I think it was a correct finding. A sentence of the death penalty is very difficult to get, so it isn't likely it will be overturned. I feel sorry for his family, wanting to look under every rock in an attempt find something, anything that will exonerate their son. I can't imagine what they are hoping such an investigation will turn up. Sadly, it will not likely amount to anything more than trying to besmirch poor Lacy's name and reputation.

Of course, I find it even more difficult to believe they will be able to raise the money anyway. The odds of new evidence turning up that would prove him innocent is highly unlikely, and his appeal process is not endless. Which is good news.

Holly, I would imagine that if I were pregnant at the time this happened, I would have been giving sideways glances at my husband/significant other all the time! Honestly though, I can see why it would have had a horrible effect on you.

As some here are aware I am very very strongly anti-capital punishment but some cases make me waver and reconsider my position.

The Scott Peterson case is one of those cases.
